late tonight
i was tryin' to write
heard a knock on my door
wandt' shore
who it would be
see...

where i live
i'm hard to find
i ain't the findin' kind
you have to look for me
you have to look to see
me

looked outta' the blinds
what did i finds
but a young man
satndin' there
where
an empty space should be
i was lookin' at him
he was lookin' at me
then i saw them
ghost
lost in my mind
the one's i didn't want to find

"yes?'
i guess
that said it all.

"remeber me?"
he ask
damn that was a task

now i ain't gay
wanted ta' say
"no"
now go away
but i didn't
shit
first mistake

"pretty damn sure
i never knew your mother
damn sure you ain't my brother...
so
no
i don't remember you"

he say
"the other night we partyed
here in the back yard..."

i gave him a time refrain...
"that is my front yard"

he grinned.

anyway.

he said...
" i saw your light was on...
so i thought i might stop in."

"boy, you can't see my light from the street
and if you chance to meet
my light
late at night
it will blind you."

he stepped back. he flushed.

"hell,
you came this way, come on in.
but i ain't gay."

anyway.

"have a sit, that chair is mine.
sit anywhere you find..."

he looked around
saw an old bar stool

"don't sit on the bed"
i knodded with my head
at the old stool.
least he twern't no fool.
he sat down.

he didn't seem to know what to say
so i led the way...

"what the fuck you doin'
knockin' on my door after mikdnight?
boy, you up tight
or you just not right?"

"well, helldo you remember the other night?..."

"no."

"well..."

"you said that before...go on..."

"sue was sittin' next to you..."

"boy i don't do names"

"you remember Alice?"

"son, names don't..."

"anyway
sue is my girlfriend...
alice is her best friend..."
and he paused

"did i fuck either of them? if i did i do not remember..."

"no, sir.."

'you call me sir, i kick your ass"

"my daddy was sir, or mr. Patterson"

"if i didn't fornicate
i can't wait
go on..."

"well sue & me been ta' gether for a year, but alice she always looked at me..."

he paused

because

he should

so i ask

'you fucked alice?
and sue is upset?
right?"

"i knew you would understand."

i just shook my head
i remembered where i was led
when i was younger
i knew that hunger

"i ask a simple question...
maybe a suggestion....
what do YOU Know about Love?"

he looked at me
quizzically
"well, i'll be 20 next year"

i laughed so hard
i shed a tear

said...
"son, look around...
trophies i found...
in 55 years
of sheddin' tears.

up and down
all around
that's where it's at...
love"
