Mother and Dad had been married for almost ten years when they decided to adopt children.
Martha, their first, was born in 1946. Martha became queen of the household for a year and a half before I arrived. She was the first grandchild as well as the first great-grandchild on my fatherís side of the family. She was doted over by parents grandparents, great-grandparents, relatives, and my parentsí friends. I was born in a small town near Fort Worth, Texas, in 1947 to a birth mother who was emotionally and financially unable to continue to care for me. I was seven months old when she decided to relinquish her parental rights. Esther, a social worker from the Fort Worth area, knew about Mother and Dadís intent to adopt other children. Therefore, she called them to offer my placement with them.
Mother had no time to prepare my sister for a new baby. There was no time to wean Martha out of her high chair or baby bed. In a hurry, Mother and Dad drove to Fort Worth to meet Esther at a ?designated hotel room. Dad said later that when he and mother came into the room, he saw me sitting in Estherís lap. I looked up at him, smiling from ear to ear, let out a squeal of delight and reached out to him with both my arms opened wide. He said that he melted in love, picked me up into his arms, and emotionally bonded with me forever more. A father's love can move mountains and provide for the strength to assist in all trials and tribulations. I am grateful for my father's love.
