Saying goodbye to a friend is never easy...

“Dead Silence”

“Don’t worry about not being able to come up to see me, I’m fine.” The familiar voice said on the other end of the line.
“But I wanted to come up…I’m sorry I got sick.” Shane said sadly.
“You just get well and take care of yourself, don’t worry about me, anymore…” and the voice was gone. Shane now heard a dial tone.
Hanging up, she drifted back off to sleep.
Michael had A.I.D.S. so she knew she couldn’t go to the hospital to visit him and it scared her because he was near death. Would he be able to hang on until she got over this awful cold? …she could only hope. She had to say goodbye, they’d been friends for years and had always cheered each other on in everything. Now he needed her strength more than ever and she wasn’t able to be there for him.
“Well”, she thought, “he did call me a few hours ago, so, he’s hanging in there. I’m sure I’ll feel better tomorrow, so I can go right up after work.” She felt better now. He’d be waiting and probably give her a hard time about getting sick…”Just any excuse will do, right, Shane?” he’d say trying to look angry but not quite able to pull it off.
And then she could go after him with something like; “yeah, and they just let anybody in this place, don’t they?!” she chuckled to herself. Then the tears began to cascade down her soft cheeks. “He’s dying…Michael…you can’t leave me…what am I going to do without you?” He’s such a great guy. Smart, funny, caring, giving…where would she ever find another friend like him? She wouldn’t and she knew it. She was grieving both for him and for herself. But she was entitled…she loved him.
The next morning the phone rang. It was a mutual friend to her and Michael calling to say that he’d passed away the day before at 3:00 in the afternoon and that he’d gone quietly in his sleep. Chills ran down Shane’s back and she felt her hair stand on end.
“But that’s impossible!” she cried out.
“He called me at 3:30 p.m. to say that he was fine and for me to get well!”
