The idea for this short story came from the fragmentary Lay of Hildebrand and a motif from Celtic myth.

"Wyrd has brought you and I onto this battlefield. Our fates were written from that moment thirty seasons ago when I chose honor and friendship, leaving you behind. But our lives are governed by the choices we make and to regret our choices is futile, regardless of their outcome. Know this, Hadubrand son of Hildebrand: I am your father and I love you, though this day will see the death of one of us."
