Mike Needs a Heart
Taken from the Book "The Voices Within Us" by Jim Stewart
One Sunday afternoon, Just before Christmas of 2002, I tried to reach a couple of friends of mine, Mike Bias and Bobby Joe Hudspeth. I had no luck reaching Mike, so I called Bobby Joe. When I told Bobby Joe I tried to reach Mike, he told me Mike was in serious condition. Mike had a heart attack and was waiting for a transplant.
I tried reaching Mike again and had no luck. Then I realized it was Sunday and Mike's Father is a minister. I knew I'd have to wait until Monday to call him. On Monday, I tried again to reach him and again I had no luck. I asked a few chaplains that I knew to say a prayer for him that day. I also called a Dj friend of mine, Roy Butler, who works for a local Christian Radio Station, KSLR, and asked him if he could ask for prayers for Mike over the radio. He told me that he would around 7:00 pm that night. I called mike again and had no luck. I left a message on his answering machine that we were going to pray for him on the radio.
I waited to hear the prayer on the radio. Roy asked the listeners to pray for Mike and said, "What a Christmas gift this would be, if Mike could get his heart." On Wednesday, I receieved a phone call from Mike's wife, Earlene. She told me that Mike had received his new heart Tuesday Morning around 5:30.
I called my disc jockey friend, Roy, to tell him the good news. That night, Roy went on the radio and informed the listeners what had taken place. Roy then asked for prayers for the donor's family.
Oh, the powers of prayer.
It's now 2008 and Mike is still going strong.
