Covent Garden London 1967

It was a basement warehouse situated in Londons fruit and veg. market area called Covent Garden. It had been called 'Middle Earth' , the years was 1967, the reason for going was to see Captain Beefheart and The Magic Trouser Press (his band). The DJ for the evening was John Peel, he was having fun on radio with a program called The Perfumed Garden.

At the far end of the venue was a small corner stage, more a platform of planks . There was an odour in the warehouse that suggested that something was being smoked, though I never had so I could not be sure if it was weed.

Miriam and I were dressed like true sixties hippies, Miriam had a pair of jeans with one leg yellow and one leg orange, she also wore a short fake fur jacket. I had a kaftan pinstriped purple trousers and a grey fake fur jacket. Perhaps it was not only because it was the sixties but we were fans of Sonny and Cher, whom we had met the same year at the Royal Garden Hotel in London.

We managed to corner John Peel and obtained his autograph, also learnt of his love for Owl Records and the amazing man that I liked Tod Dockstader, to me the king of electronic music.

Captain Beefheart was a musician that you had to observe, his manner and style were comic and his lyrics acidic to the hypocritical world at the time, be it Vietnam or just snotty nosed politics.

The venue was on-going from about 7 till gone 11 and we managed to catch the last tube home.

Wish I could go back and relive those times.

I was at this gig and if I remember correctly, Middle Earth opened at about 11 p.m. Also, wasn't Jeff Dexter - Middle Earth's d.j. there too!!
