My Two-Cents (comments/opinions); The Red, White and Blue gives everyone in the United States the right to voice their opinion, and I'll take this opportunity to voice my opinion on various matters...especially the immigration and 'English only' issues, etc.
I promised myself, when I started writing seriously in August, 2006, that I would not get into politics...but with the landscape all across America changing (for the worst), I had to become an activist and voice my opinion on the issues that concern all Americans, etc.
Family background: My mother's maiden name is Lopez, and has roots from Mexico; and my father's last name is Aragon and has roots from Spain. I come from a family of ten kids...five boys and five girls. Half of the kids are dark complected like my mother; and the other half are light-complected (including me) like my father. Some people don't know that I'm Hispanic, until they hear me speak Spanish.
While growing up, my parents never talked to us kids in Spanish...it was always English-speaking family. My parents spoke to each other in Spanish...but never to us kids...and for that, I will always ge grateful. What good is speaking Spanish in this society going to do for me?
My family resided in the 'po' side of town near the railroad yards, and the neighborhood was predominately Hispanic and Black. At the time, I spoke a combination of Spanish and English...or 'Spang-lish.' Of the ten kids in my family, I am the only one that can speak and understand Spanish.
At the age of 13, my father moved my family to a predominately white neighborhood, and now speaking Spanish was deleted from my vocabulary, and I have only spoken Spanish when necessary. Again, this move was a plus for me, because it strengthened my English-speaking and writing abilities. I've always gotten good marks in the English class...but the reader of this piece will decide that for him or herself.
My parents always insisted that we speak English FIRST...and then if we wanted to speak Spanish...German...French...Chinese...that was okay, too. It would be English that would get us a job to survive...and none of the others...so us kids had to focus on English.
When people...immigrant or non-immigrant don't want to learn even the basics of the English language...they're lazy!
lazy; (definition); idleness; slow-moving; sluggish;
Many times I've gone to the grocery store, and I've seen parents speaking to their kids in Spanish...and the kids responding in Spanish...and I think the parents are making a big mistake! It's getting tougher and tougher for a kid to get a job nowadays, and that kid better get as much English as he or she can. People should keep their own cultures; traditions; and roots and ansestors and be proud! I'm proud of who I am, and where I come from, etc. Europeans; Native Americans; Asians and all peoples of the world should be proud of their cultures!
Everyone knows that America was founded on hate; bigotry; oppression and racism! Don't believe me...just ask any Native American; a black person or any woman! They know all about hate and racism! But, that's not what this piece is about.
Of the 14 high schools in Albuquerque, the poorest performer is many time Rio Grande high school. That's because it's predominately Hispanic...and like I said before, parents teach their kids Spanish before English, and it shows in their schoolwork. The drop-out rate is high in this school...and in my opinion, kids struggle in this school, and that's one reason why they drop out. If the parents would teach their kids English while growing up...it would make it easier on the kids, etc. My two boys don't know a word in Spanish...but they can keep their culture...and learn Spanish...or German...or French or Chinese if they want to. Over the years, I've insisted that they learn English FIRST!
Q. Is the problem in this high school a teacher/student problem?
A. No...the problem in this high school is a parent problem!
Immigrant or not...parents with not much or no ambition...no shame...no pride...any old food stamps will be fine, and American's are fed up with these people!
But, this isn't an issue directed at the Hispanic/Latino, etc. It applies to all people...the French...the Germans...the Asians and Native Americans as well. Children are not going to do well in school, unless they can speak and write well in English. Jobs in 2010 are at a premium...and it's going to take all the education and skills a person can muster to get a job these days and survive. I don't know of anyone who likes being in an English class, do you? You can't grow up speaking another language while growing up, and then drop out of high school, and be expected to be successful at anything!

Job applications: Over a decade, I've been laid off from six jobs, and I've been a temporary employee longer than I would have liked to be. At one job, I worked in a personnel office of a company. The personnel director came up to me with a stack of papers, and told me that he was going to throw all the job applications away, and if I wanted to see them before he threw them away. Well, I had never seen anyone's job application before, so I told him sure.
The only reason why he still had the job applications, was he was required by law to keep them for 90 days, otherwise, he told me he would have thrown them away right away. What I saw, for the first time...was awful! Every one of the job applications I saw was awful...sloppy; mis-spelled words; grammar problems; neatness problems...I can't tell the reader how awful these job applications were. These people really expected to get a job...and for somebody to pay them money?
"Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired." Jules Renard
Quit job: In another temporary assignment, I worked for this company, and the two people I worked with, spoke Spanish all the time. I guess I accomodated and spoke Spanish, too...but after a while, it got old. And, that's because, while I can speak on a social basis...I start having trouble when it comes to speaking about temperatures; chemicals and rules and regulations, etc.
After about a month, I decided I had had enough of this...that is...I was accomidating these two by speaking Spanish...so I decided to go into the bosses office and quit. I told the boss, it would be my last week on the assignment, and I told him why...and I quit the job. I was not going to accomidate these two people any longer!
Over my lifetime (65) there have been many instances, whereby, other Hispanics, who do not speak English have 'used' me or try to 'use' me to translate for them from Spanish to English. I would not accomidate them...and I would usually tell them, 'me no speakee espanol.'
My attitude on this issue...either learn to speak and understand English...or GET OUT! Pack your bags and leave the country...and that goes for Hispanics; French; Germans; Asians...Aliens...etc...etc. American's are getting fed up with this immigration/English only matter...
"Tomorrow is the only day in the year that appeals to a lazy person." Jimmy Lyons
Bills; brochures; copy machines; statements and you name it...are coming in half English...and half Spanish, etc. If you can't find your way around this society with basic English...it's time to pack your bags and GET OUT! American's are fed up with immigrants coming to this country, and milking the tax-payer's for more social services.
Inspiring people: In another job assignment, I was assigned to work at a department at the University of New Mexico. (engineering) Who I met and worked for there, really is inspiring story. My boss was a fellow, who lived and came from the slums of Mexico City. He told me many stories about how he and his family just survived in the slums.
But, this fellow had a dream and he hit the books. A real success story, one like I never had heard before. He got an academic scholarship to the University of Mexico...and after that...he transferred to the University of New Mexico. He eventually got a Ph.D in electrical engineering! What a success story...can you imagine how difficult that was to accomplish? The first thing he had to do to get this far was to learn and understand English.
"We have a system that increasingly taxes work...and subsidizes non-work." Milton Friedman
Now, I'm not suggesting that immigrants to this country, get a degree in English; engineering or anything else. But, they should have a basic knowlege of the language to get around, and not have to use other people to translate for them all the time. But, that requires the individual to do a little book work...and many people don't want to do that...they just want to milk the system and American's are getting pretty tired of it.
From: Wikipedia: English only movement; current law; The United States federal government currently does not specify an official language, however, all official documents in the U.S. are written in English, though, some are written in other languages.
English is the official language in the following states; Alabama; Alaska; Arizona; Arkansas, California; Colorado; Floride; Georgia; Idaho; Illinois; Indiana; Iowa; Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska; New Hampshire; North Carolina; North Dakota; South Carolina; South Dakota; Tennessee; Utah; Virginia; Wyoming.
English only means to me, that the rights of U.S. citizens are not violated, because citizens can speak whatever language they choose in their private lives. For example, my parents spoke to each other in Spanish all the time when I was growing up. But, when is becomes government business; public business; public schools; public libraries...that's a different matter. I don't want instructions on how to use a copy machine in a public library to be written in German; Chinese; or French...it has to be written in English, etc.
In my view, parents of kids who come from countries around the world...and even locally...do their kids great harm...by not insisting that their kids learn to speak English when they are very young...which will prepare them for school when they start at five or six years old. It doesn't mean that the children cannot speak another language...that's silly. It only means that children should focus on English to have an easier time in school, and then they can speak one or two other languages if they choose to do so.
Example: When I was a kid, my parents and uncles and aunts would be sitting around the table playing cards. Everybody at the table was talking Spanish. But, when one of my parents or aunts or uncles talked to one of us kids in the next room...it was always in English. My parents insisted that we kids grow up learning English...FIRST...to do better in school...and then getting to know another language could come later.

If a person pleads ignorance in America, whether they are an immigrant or not...they can easily get on the gravy-train! (tax-payer/hand-outs)
And, to all those lazy individuals who are Hispanic; European; Asian and Aliens of all colors...do what it takes to learn basic English...or pack your bags and go back where you came from! The American people are tired of all these freeloaders being on the gravy-train...spending their tax-dollars...
