I think the biggest change for America and for the world, was the ending of the Cold War between two Super-powers, and which could have been the beginning of WWIII.
The changing times we live in; I was born in 1945, and lived throughout the Cold War, until it came to an end in the falling of the Berlin Wall in the late 1980's Never was I so frightened, as when the Cuban Missle Crises took place. I was in high school as the time, and I remember it as if were yesterday. Two super-powers about to go at each...and could have destroyed every living thing on Earth. A scary time, indeed!
This is a big deal, as far as jobs are concerned, because, with the ending of the Cold War, there would not be as much need for weapons such as amunition; fighter planes, radar units. Because of the times we live in (2011) many jobs have been cut over the years. We did not get to this point overnight...it took a long time to here, and now the worthless Congress has to act...and the American people have to put the necessary pressure to act...or we'll all be up the creek without a paddle, etc.
When I was in the Air Force between 1965 and 1969, I was stationed on a radar site for all four years. At that time, we used the old technology of radars, and we were in a squadron of eight units of eight radar sites throughout the southwest part of the United States. I was the last one to leave the radar site when it closed in 1969. All the radar today, is done with sattelites in 2011.
Living at peace with the world, is costing jobs for Americans. The Pentagon has closed hundreds of bases. When I was in school in the military, I was stationed in Amarillo, Texas, which was a combination Air Training base and a SAC base (Stratigic Air Command) That base is closed.
More bases will be closed in the future by the Pentagon. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which is heavy federal presence, such as Sandia Labs; Kirtland AFB, Los Alamos Labs; White Sands Missle Range; Cannon AFB; Holloman AFB. The Pentagon is looking for futhers closings and/or consolidations, along with the Energy Department which runs Sandia Labs, etc.
My father used to work for General Electric for over 30 years, and they made jet engines. That plant is now closed. Because of the ending of the Cold War, there is no need for as many weapons, etc.
Technology: For three years, I worked for a plastic manufacturer. Things like smoke alarms; vacumn cleaners; and parts for all kinds of industries were made including computers...for Apple, Intel, etc. There were about 32 presses making these parts, and there was a robot at each press doing its work...therefore eliminating jobs. Operators were not needed at these presses, because the robots did the job.
Additional government cut-backs: For over ten years, I worked for a large engineering company, with 35,000 employess around the world. The company survived on government contraces. I remember working on a Navy contract for five years. Many parts of the government such Interior; Lightning Center; NASA; Hurricane Center and so forth. That company is gone now.
World Economy; The United States has more competition from all over the world than it ever had. This has made it tougher on the job front, and for companies to stay in business.
Population living longer: Because of new medical breakthroughs, people are living longer in this country. What is the oldest person you've ever seen? For me, it was a 93 year old man while I was in the VA hospital; and a 94 year old woman who lived down the hall from me. People are living longer today, there needs increase in medical and social services. There's nothing cheap about these two areas. Another reason why the United States is going bust...
My father-in-law lived to be 105 years old; and my mother-in-law lived to be 101. There's nothing wrong with America...it's just the times we live in. Isn't that what everyone wants...to live longer? I can just see you, working as a bag-boy in a grocery store at the age of 97! Or, a greeter at Wal-Mart at the age of 118!
Population: In the year 2011, I am 66 years young, and when I was a kid in the 50's, there were about 100 million people in the United States. Today, in 2011, there are over 300 million. You do the math. American's and the government have to address the issue of population, which the Congress continues to kick the can down the road. Do we want to be the size of China? India? Mexico? Children are born into garbage dumps in many of these places around the world. Is that what we want for our childres. Over 200 million more people in just my lifetime which is incredible!
Social Security; When Social Security was born in the 1930's, I don't think anyone at that time envisioned the United States being over 300 million people, and that people would live longer. So, what do we do with all the old people? Execute them?
When the notorious Love Canal happened in 1978...it just didn't happen overnight. The chemical dump was growing for over 25 years, and then is came to bang...and did its damage. The same thing has happened in the U.S. economy...the problems have been growing over a 25 year period...and now how do we fix them?
Immigration: This issue has to be addressed by the worthless Congress, as the United States, can no longer support the populations of the world. More immigration means more jobs, that the United States doen't have; more social services that the United States doesn't have; more of everything! Over population and immigration are two throny issues that the worthless Congress has to deal with in the future...like it or not.
American's biggest problem...
A worthless Congress: With an approval rating of just 9% in 2011, our leaders have failed us. They're right on the job, when they give themselves raises, but other than that, the Congress has been a disgrace and just kicks the can down the road, and doesn't want to do the People'l business any time soon. If the American people don't pressure this worthless Congress to act...and stop kicking the can down the road and doing what they do best...finger-pointing...the American's are doomed, as I see it.
Greed/corruption: The price of a vehicle is obscene; the price of a house is obscene...and greed in America is everywhere. I think it will be these two...greed and corruption...that will spell doom for America. In other words...self-destruction! Does America want to be like Greece; Italy; Argentina; Egypt? Most or all are corrupt, and will be the first to go down! The American people can learn from what's going on in Europe, because I think most of those countries are corrupt, etc. Because they're corrupt, I don't think they can ever come to terms with their debt...does Amerca want to be like them? If the greed and corruption doesn't stop in this country...I see more hopelessness in this country, etc, etc, etc.
So, there's nothing wrong with the United States...(except a worthless Congress), excessive corporate greed by companies and on Wall Street and a big, fat attitude problem of Americans...other than that...the United States WAS...read my lips...WAS... a great place to live...
