Pay attention to the little humble penny and its power to inspire us for Presidentís Day and everyday!

As we celebrate our fountain of history with President’s day with all sorts of sales thrown at us asking us to reach into our pockets and shell out some doe, let this be an opportunity to take a look at our basic unit of money, the penny and remember how this least valued coin holds the power and meaning in President’s day.

Now, a few moons ago, in 2001, I wrote a penny poem now turned into a new children’s book called, THE POWER OF THE PENNY. This book may be for kids ages 6-12, but many of us are still kids at heart, who could benefit from the magic little copper coin and its symbolism.

The Power of the Penny!

Take a look at the penny we forget to see,
A symbol for all, of the hero we struggle to be.

It’s worth the least, in the worldly material sense,
But holds deepest treasures within its true essence.

As you peer take note of the word liberty,
The value that lets us practice spiritually.

And written on top, is a message to us,
We are not alone, our life is “In God We Trust.”

But what separates this coin from its brothers,
Is the man on the front, who is like no other.

His name is Lincoln, but became Honest Abe,
As he taught us the true meaning of becoming self made.

Now turn over the penny & read “E Pluribus Unum,”
A latin phrase meaning “Out of Many, One.

Out of many you can be “One” like Lincoln,
To travel the path of a hero, living life with inspiration.

So let the penny be your guide, any moment of the day,
To inspire you with love & truth, in creating your way!

So there you have it, the meaning of President’s Day all rolled into the little copper coin. Now it’s your turn to practice the power of the penny and no matter who you are, you matter in making a difference today.

THE POWER OF THE PENNY book is a great source for any adult who would like to reconnect to ones inspirational and American roots. It is for parents and teachers to talk with kids about values, history, character, money wisdom, kindness and honesty. It comes with activities to engage kids to take action in living values and is illustrated by an incredible DC Marvel Spiderman/Superman artist. Oh, and by the way, have you seen the 5th new penny released February 11, 2010, and the 4 pennies released by the US Mint in 2009 in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th Birthday year. They are worth checking out!!

Ms. Redmond, whenever I hear: "A penny for your thoughts." I shall think of your delightful and informative poem.
