I love fishing but mostly fly fishing. My cousins here down south like a different kind of dare devil, in your pants, fishing.

Leave it up to the "good old boys" to save bait, line and reel to come up with the cheapest trick to fishing I've ever seen.
I take that back. Once up in north Georgia ,heading down to do some fishing for Rainbows, I passed a few young fellas with a line of trout and a beebee gun.For the life of me that just doesn't seem fair! Who am I to argue? They had a smile that broke their faces.

Well, fishing laws are sometimes different in different states, but I have fished in a number of them over the years and I'm not aware of any state where it's legal to shoot trout with any kind of gun, even a BB gun. Those boys were lucky that you were not a game warden. Most states allow fishing for "rough" species, e.g., carp, bowfin and gar with a bow and arrow (to which a line is attached).

Actually, the cheapest way of fishing, unless you consider it a cost to get your hands and arms bloodied by sharp little teeth, has been practiced throughout their history by the "good ole boys" of the South. This is called "noodling" or "grappling, depending on the particular region. The object of this game are nesting catfish, often in the 20 to 70 pound class. They are caught by getting bodily into the water, locating and pulling them from their lair (usually a submerged hollow log or cave in the river bank) by hand. I've tried this adventuresome quest a couple of times myself before considering that huge snapping turtles and cottonmouth moccasins also inhabit those lairs at times. I determined that I would thereafter be content to watch the "good ole boys" have all the fun.
Best regards,
