Establishing the Difference in Edible Roots
With so many similarities, it seems a short leap of faith to assume that the sweet potato is nothing more than a lavishly colored relative of the standard spud. They are both starchy, rooty, and quite delicious. Red, gold, and white potatoes are all very prevalent, so it would make sense that potatoes of the 'sweet' variety would be yet another variation.
Surprisingly, sweet potatoes are more closely related to the purple morning glories that are vining up your drain pipe than they are to potatoes - the difference is lineage.
