This article discusses why Kevin Durant should be in the conversation for this year's NBA MVP.

Both LeBron James and Kobe Bryant have staked each of their respective teams to the best records in each conference. Whenever you have a conversation about the Most Valuable Player, these two players are always mentioned at the top of the list and with good reason. Kobe Bryant is one of the best finishers in the game (27.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5 assists per game) and no opposing team can guard James one-on-one often creating easy baskets for his teammates. James is averaging almost 29.7 points per game along with 8.6 assists and 7.5 rebounds. All these numbers are better than they were in the 2008-2009 season. After leading his team to the best record in the league for the second straight season, King James will more than likely walk away with his second consecutive Most Valuable Player award, I think there is another player who deserves consideration as well.

That player is second-year forward from the University of Texas, Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant is averaging career highs in both points and rebounds (30 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 assists) per contest. The Oklahoma City Thunder won a total of 23 games during the 2008-2009 season and needless to say that were considered an easy win on their opponents’ schedule. This season, behind Kevin Durant, the Thunder have more than doubled their win total (49) and have a chance of reaching 50 with three games remaining. Oklahoma has gone from being a blip on the radar screen in the Western Conference to the sixth seed in this year and anyone that thinks that this team will be an easy out in a first round playoff series, better reconsider that notion. If the playoffs began today, the Thunder would be matched against Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets. On paper it seems like a no-brainer but with Kenyon Martin not quite at a hundred percent, the Thunder have a chance at a potential upset if the Nuggets don‘t bring their best game. Being that this is Durant’s only second year in the league, it is safe to presume that his game will continue to evolve and his name should be consistently talked about in the discussion of the one of the best players in the league going forward.
