This is an essay about my mother, which appeared in the anthology, Voices of Alzheimer's: The Healing Companion: Stories for Courage, Comfort and Strength (Voices Of series)
My mother was a talker who loved to entertain. My childhood bedroom adjoined the living room, and many nights I lay awake while my parents hosted parties. I heard my mother monopolizing the conversation, interrupting people, and sharing long, detailed sagas I swore she’d told over a hundred times before--usually embarrassing stories about my sister or me, like the time we ran away in our nightgowns. Her voice was loud, and, to me, grating.
