Find what you want.

The Internet is the most amazing source to spread the word about your book. Interpreting what you find and possibly following links to the jackpot connection is not for the impatient. But when you find that one connection that opens up the information prize you are looking for, it is like hitting a home run or finishing your first 10K run. My book Rigby's Roads has the common thread of motorcycles and it touches on the Harley Davidson owners group known as HOG. Doing a search on GOOGLE for the word HOG results in 1,750,000 hits and finds the HOG sites along with The Hog's Breath Saloon in Key West Florida, and industrial hog farming in North Carolina. Changing the search to "HOG Chapters" using parenthesis around the two words narrows down the search to only 1,250 hits and filters out the unwanted different meanings.

Think you are done.. no. Now you will find web sites that don't load, have been disconnected, or ask you to download a newer version of Netscape or Internet Explorer which is more compatible with that sites engine. If you go to upload a newer version you may get lost as to what exactly you should do. Then you start to second guess what the resulting changes might screw up in your computer.

So you temporarily push the upgrade aside and click on the sites that work, click on other Links and then BINGO ... you find the one site that has everything you are looking for. Sometimes the prize is on the first page of results and sometimes it is on page 17. Clicking on all of them might take a lifetime even if you are on a DSL line. One hint is to look at the URL link at the bottom of the results. Sometimes you can have 10 different results but when you look at the URL connection it is the same site, but pointing to different pages on the same site. If you don't like the main page, you might want to skip the other search results with the same address.

Changing the Search words will bring up different results so don't be afraid to mix and match different search words ... check out the different search hits;
Note the difference when using parenthesis.

HOG 1,750,000
"HOG chapters" 1,250
"Harley Chapters" 36
Harley Chapters 58,200
"Harley Owners Group" 15,900
Harley Owners Group 105,000

Be creative with your searches and you will find the results you are looking for.

Thank you Michael. This is only going to help me. I find the internet very useful in my research but also a tad frustrating. This will help immensely.
With gratitude

Trying to find what you want can be pretty difficult, at times, but tis' true, if you try a description one way or another, you'll eventually find a way to find what you're looking for.

Excellent article, Michael. (Ah, I see you're as tenacious as me. lol) As one who has a lenghty background in retail/marketing, I concur; this article is BANG ON. Thank you.
