Cutback on alcohol, coffee, and cigarettes can save big.
Do the math: a person smoke 1 pack of cigarettes a week for 10 years.
1 pack average ~$7.
1 year = 52 weeks
$7(52weeks)(10yrs) = $3640
3packs per week for 10 years = $10, 920
Bringing lunch to work versus buying.
Do the math: a person buy a $5 lunch a day per working week for 10 years.
$5/day for 5 working days/week = $25/week = $100/month
$100(12months)(10years) = $12000
We all have to eat, and I know $5 is not a big deal. If you buy a 20lbs bag of rice for ~ $15, a chicken for ~ $6, a bottle of oil and seasoning, factor in electricity or gas… you will spend less than $100 a month for lunch, 10 times less than buying a lunch per day. Buying lunch only on Fridays is still a life saver.
Once I recalled standing by a vending machine at work and my money got stuck, leaving me without the can of ice-tea I craved. A lady walked into the cafeteria and popped a Lipton teabag into a cup of hot water, mixed and placed it in the freezer. She later told me how she’d been making her ice tea for free, I tried and it was just as refreshing.
