I set aside one room in my house to be my "office." It didn't work.
I always wanted to be a published author with my own in-home office where I could sit by my desk behind closed doors, away from my wife and kids, while I focused on my writing. I pretty well furnished the room with bookshelves, a cherrywood desk, a computer desk and hutch, and of course all the electronics that go along with the office environment. Yeah, it looked good, but my creative juices didn't flow. Then I remembered the story of "Hef" starting his playboy empire at the kitchen table. I got rid of everything in the room, and put in a kitchen counter, beat-up chairs, and a round kitchen table I bought at a garage sale. My computer is one with the cpu built into the screen, so that eliminated the cumbersome unit with wires sticking out all over the place. I have a remote printer on the kitchen counter. The counter has drawers and doors for storage, and enough room for a one-shot coffee pot. I even made an area in the room to hold books and other knick-knacks. I love the comfort of writing at the kitchen table, and have also removed the door. Any interuption from the wife and kids is a welcomed break. Oh, by the way, NO kitchen sink with running water! All I have left to do now is the floor. Still contemplating - asphalt specked tiles maybe? Happy writing everyone!
