Article Review of "Islam's double standard: Where is Muslim respect for Christians or Jews?" by Cal Thomas, published in The Chronicle Telegram, Friday, June 3rd 2005.
Reviewed by Robert Allan Williams
In his latest of flip-flopping articles between opposition to Anglo-American wars against people in oil-rich lands and support for the statist-generated Islaamophobia that fuels popular support for them, Cal Thomas revealed not only his grave ignorance of the religion of Islaam and its love for Jews and Christians but also his thinly disguised attempts at disinformation on behalf of statist-waged information warfare.
Consider, for example, Thomas's opening sentence: "The Pentagon has acknowledged five instances in which guards or interrogators at the detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, handled the Koran [sic] in such a way as to cause offense to some who believe it is the revealed word of Allah". Besides misspelling "Qur'aan" as "Koran" and failing to translate "Qur'ann" into English which means "Recitation", Thomas also failed to translate the Arabic word for God - "Allah" into English thereby contributing to the false but widely held notion among non-Arabs that "Allah" is some idol or myth. Readers would no doubt be surprised to learn that Arab Christians pray to "Allah" and even Arab Jehovah's Witnesses pray to "Jehovah Allah" according to their website at www.watchtower.org .
The question that comes to a critical mind is what would make Cal Thomas write an opening sentence like this? Why does he mislead the reader into thinking God is not the subject, but something "other". When Thomas commented in his previous articles on French Catholics, he translated "Dieu" to "God". And when he did the same concerning Spanish Catholics, he translated "Dios" to "God". But Thomas consistently refuses to translate "Allah" to God even though millions of Arabic-speaking Christians refer to God as "Allah". Another issue within the opening sentence is Thomas's bent to quote Pentagon numbers which are extremely low and to ignore the much higher numbers alleged by human rights groups. Also contentious is Thomas's reference to Guantanamo Bay as a "detention facility" rather than the concentration camp of tortures that it is. Thomas refers to the torturers as "guards" or "interrogators" rather than explaining what those terms really stand for.
Jim Minnery, a Vietnam War-era interrogator who spoke to the North East Region meeting of the Libertarian Party of Ohio in April 2005, explained that torturing Vietnamese prisoners was part of the interrogator's remit. In this capacity, he said he grew to have great respect for the Vietnamese who endured American tortures such as having their private parts wired for painful electric shocks. Subsequently, this veteran has lent his voice to the current anti-war movement. Amnesty International has echoed Jim Minnery's views on torture and rightly accuses the U.S. government of prisoner and human rights abuse.
So what motivated Thomas to fashion his story in this way? Did he intend to clarify the teachings of "peace through submission to God" i.e. "Islaam" in Arabic, or did he wish to muddle things in support of Islaamophobia and American-powered British empire? It is a critical question that requires one to continue to examine the remainder of Thomas's text, which may reveal something about Thomas's religio/politico purposes in writing his article in the manner he chose.
In his second paragraph, Thomas said "The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, General Richard Myers, rebutted the notion of inappropriate treatment of detainees last weekend when the told Fox News Sunday that these are people who would "slit our throats, our children's throats" were they to be set free. Ohio libertarians and civil rights advocates are well acquainted with the case of a local detainee, Ashraf Al-Jailani of Cuyahoga Falls, who is not being held in Guantanamo Bay. Instead he is being held without charges in a jail in Pennsylvania for two years now for the "non"-crime of being a chemist. A quiet family man, he is not the picture of Richard Myer's propaganda. In fact, even his employers at Jewish-owned Gojo Industries are looking forward to the day he is freed and are holding his job for him.
So does Thomas take issue with G-man Myers and the government's unlawful actions? Does he respond to the America that these turncoats have created which frigtens the world on par with the British Empire they inherited? After all, our government has killed one of our own presidents - JFK, and other leaders - MLK and Bobby Kennedy, who stood before the world as bearers of American liberty. Our government has and continues to devastate small countries on the other side of the world. At home, our own murder rate is fifty times higher than other industrialized nations. Worst of all, the U.S. is the only nation to have nuked whole cities of innocent civilians including their children, grandparents, dogs and cats. The Anglo-American bombing mayhem in Afghanistan and Iraq, although not nuclear (yet), creates the same destruction for many civilians and their pets; on television we have witnessed an Iraqi farmer murdered by a U.S. soldier for the non-crime of trying to get his melons to market. And in Fahrenheit 9/11, footage revealed the melted remains of the atrocious murders of several families that had attended a wedding which was was bombed by U.S. planes. Certainly our government's violence frightens our world neighbors and troubles many of us within the U.S. police state.
So does Thomas take issue with G-man Myers and his law-breaking Constitution-trampling ilk? Does Thomas examine our violently sick society and the moral questions that are generated by government-sponsored domestic psyops and information warfare? Does he address the threat to American and world liberty coming from Washington, District of Criminals? No. Instead Thomas establishes his thesis that Islaam is "a significant threat to the United States" thereby manufacturing polarization, Islaamophobia, and ensuring that his columns will be printed nationwide in newspapers owned by corporate chains in our semi-fascist nation.
His third paragraph begins "Islamic countries apply a double standard when it comes to the treatment of 'holy books' and people who differ in faith and practice from Islamic dogma". Here Thomas pretends that CIA and Britain's MI6 have not installed dictators, kings, drug lords, generals and other despots as leaders in every Muslim country save those in which the French did the same. In short, there are no Islaamic countries. There are only Muslim countries ruled by CIA-installed or maintained rulers. Some examples of these are General Musharraf of Pakistan, Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan, the sham democracy in Iraq that replaces the CIA-installed and U.S.-removed Saddam Hussayn, King Fahd of Arabia, and so on. Every Muslim country is ruled today by someone chosen by the puppet masters in Washington, D.C.. For a country to be "Islaamic", i.e. "peace in submission to God", the ruler would have to be chosen by the people, not by outsiders. In Islaam, there is no such thing as a ruler who is a king, dictator, or other despot. Where a dictator rules over Muslims, you do not have Islaam.
Next Thomas goes on to say "While Islamic groups in the United States are engaged in 'sensitivity training' sessions for non-Muslims that have included federal workers, the Ohio National Guard and U.S. Air Force Academy, there are no such training sessions directed at Muslims to teach them tolerance for non-Islamic faiths". Again Thomas displays his ignorance or intentional distortion of the religion of Islaam. The Recitation (Al-Qur'aan) not only contains a chapter titled the "Sons of Israel" but has another titled "Mary", mother of Jesus. God teaches Muslims in the Recitation (Qur'aan) that Christians and Jews have a special place in heaven and encourages Muslims men to marry them on the condition that they protect their path toward God. In fact, Muslims are told to defend Christians and Jews from harm.
Thomas continues his Islaamophobic propaganda saying "the denigration of Jews and Christians throughout much of the Islamic world is theological and political business as usual". Again, Thomas sidesteps the issue that there are no Islaamic countries and that Muslims are held captive inside their own countries by CIA-installed dictators and kings. And he confused the victims' denigration of Westerners who turn a blind eye to the evils of American-powered British empire with alleged denigration of Christians and Jews. Muslims who practice Islaam do not denigrate observant Christians and practicing Jews. To the contrary, many Christian denominations are held in high esteem such as Mennonites, Quakers, Seventh Day Adventists, etc in addition to Orthodox Judaism.
Thomas concludes his fourth paragraph by falsely stating that "Jews are regularly referred to as 'apes and pigs', mostly because that is what the Koran [sic] calls them". Prophet Muhammad never referred to Jews as apes and pigs and the Recitation (Qur'aan) never says that either. Thomas distorted an account from the Recitation that tells of a group of believers who persistently ignored God's commandment in Exodus 31:14 to keep the Sabbath or be put to death. They turned away from God and were then turned into apes for their rebelliousness. In other words, they were not permitted to continue existing as human beings but suffered death by becoming members of the animal kingdom. This story does not assert that apes devolved from man and nowhere does it say that apes are Jews. It says that some rebellious people suffered an Old Testament punishment and were no longer to continue living as human beings. When a Muslim refers to this story, he is referring to the consequences of transgression in the same way that Christians and Jews refer to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah (which is also a story shared by Muslims).
Thomas then criticizes the U.S.-installed monarchy ruling unjustly in the Hijaz lands, also known as Saudi Arabia, and unknowingly finds himself in agreement with most of the world's Muslims. The CIA-installed and maintained king is a bigger thorn in the heels of Arab Muslims than the British king was to the American colonists. But unlike the American colonists who had assistance from France in overthrowing the British king in 1776, no government has stepped up to offer their support to the Arab Sons of Liberty in their attempts to dethrone their anti-Islaamic king. And that's because the crooks in Washington, District of Criminals, put King Fahd on the throne and have kept him there. In short, Saudi Arabia is so far from being Islaamic to the extent that scholars of Islaamic jurisprudence have lifted the "hajj" or pilgrimage requirement for Muslims until Islaam is restored in the Hijaz lands.
Thomas continued his disinformation saying "Richard Cohen wrote, 'The Arab world is the last bastion of unbridled, unashamed, unhidden and unbelievable anti-Semitism'". Thomas is either unaware that Arabs, like Hebrew-blooded Jews, are Semites or he intentionally is trying to kick Arabs out of the Semitic race and "otherize" them, which is the worst form of anti-Semitism. In addition, many Arabs are in fact Hebrew-blooded Christians and Muslims who converted to Christianity and Islaam over the centuries from Judaism. Many a family reunion in the Levant, for example, would find Jews, Christians and Muslims all in attendance. But because Thomas echoes Cohen's propaganda, he conveniently neglects to tell his readership that true practicing Jews get on well with Christians and Muslims.
His third to last paragraph is simply rot: "Despite the Western diplomatic talk about Arabs and Palestinians living in peace within a geographically reduced Palestine, the Arab world demonstrates no intention of coming to terms with Israel or the Jewish (or Christian) people, unless those terms involve their complete subjugation to Islam [sic], or their deaths". This statement is outrageously untrue . In Henry Grady Weaver's "The Mainspring of Human Progress", chapter ten reveals in detail how Islaam liberated the Western world from the Dark Ages and how Jews, Christians and Muslims lived in peace for hundreds of years. In fact, as late as the 18th century, thousands of British emigrants from the poorhouses of England fled to North Africa for its relative freedom. Islaam, as was shown earlier, reveals God's love for Christians and Jews to every Muslim through God's Last Testament - The Recitation (Al-Qur'aan).
Then Thomas makes the fantastic claim that it's not Muslims who are being bombed by the British and American state terrorists. Those aren't Muslims getting bombed, melted, and shot in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Indonesia, etc - those are Christians according to Thomas. He says that Christians are "the most persecuted faith group in the world", which is absurd. It is true that Christian Kurds and Christian Palestinians are taking it on the chin along with the Muslims, but the worldwide corporatist oil-thirsty billionaire club wants what's under the feet of Muslims - namely oil. Black Gold. Arab Tea.
Thomas concludes "To accept this double standard creates a significant threat to the United States". There is no double standard. Islaam teaches peace through submission to God. Christians and Jews have extra rights and can expect certain duties to be performed on their behalf by Islaamic people. But in a world without Islaamic countries where Muslims are at the mercy of U.S.-installed dictators and/or Anglo-American bombs, it might be difficult to locate any Islaamic people.
In conclusion, the only double standard that threatens America is that of the turncoats in Washington, Disrict of Criminals, who have sold us out to British foreign policy and their vociferous supporters. It doesn't take a George Washington to see that it is wrong for our president to hold hands with Britain's prime minister and force our military to do American-powered British empire.
