Our son Brian L. Smith; is serving as an Army Captain in Germany. He has previously served in S. Korea and Okinawa. Brian graduated from Southern Illinois/Edwardsville where he was in ROTC. On graduation, he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant. As a father, I was proud to pin one of his bars on his uniform.
He soon will be deployed to Kuwait for one year, leaving his wife Barb, and children, Christina and Josiah in Germany. He will miss birthdays, his anniversary, and one year of holidays with his family. This will be hard for him as well as his family, but he is proud to answer the call and go willingly to serve his Country.
Brian was misguided in his youth and chose to support another team, which shall remain nameless (Cubs). He wisely married a devout Cardinals fan that quickly showed him the error of his ways and has been a devoted Cardinals fan for the last decade. He follows the Cardinals while he is in Europe, watches the games that he can receive there, and roots for them constantly. He has been known to call his father in Illinois to celebrate a Cardinals win.
Brian loves his family, his God, and especially the United States. He is a warm, caring, American and spreads goodwill to the European he meets. He always presents himself as a typical American who cares for the people of the world. He travels widely through Europe with his family and delights in surprising people by speaking in their language.
He would have been the first in line to buy a ticket for the season opener, and has watched clips endlessly of the parade of Cardinals players past and present.
