Having Trouble Believing In God?

I meet many people who do not believe in God or a God so to speak. Did you ever wonder why so many of us supposed believers cling to our believe so stubbornly? I have been by more than one bedside and discussed the existence of God and Heaven with more than one person who knew they were soon to die. Death is scary to us all. Life for us all ends in death. It is amazing how we all strive to get ahead not admitting to ourselves that the reward at the end of life is death. Life has a tendency to trap us in our circumstances.

Many of us are not living the lives we envisioned for ourselves. Myself included. Many of us are tortured by hind sight which is always so crystal clear and unforgiving. We sacrifice health, time with loved ones and our youth striving for success in some endeavour or another. Look at Steve Jobs the founder of Apple. He passed away a few weeks ago in his mid fifties still a young man by today’s standards. They just announced Apple has about 81.5 billion dollars in cash in the bank. Andrew Carnegie was the richest man in the world at one point. Here are some of his quotes.

1. I resolved to stop accumulating and begin the infinitely more serious and difficult task of wise distribution.

2. I would as soon leave my son a curse as the almighty dollar.

3. Wealth is a sacred trust which its possessor is bound to administer in his lifetime for the good of the community.

4. There is no class as pitiably wretched as that which possesses money and nothing else.

It is obvious the money maybe the goal early in life does not maintain its lustre as life draws to a close. So the big question. What is life all about? I have an opinion on Life, faith and God that has been formed over the years by many mistakes and over coming those mistakes. I ask you if you do not believe in God do you believe in good and evil? Of course you do. That is the one thing most of humanity believes in. We all witness both to some degree all the time. For me God stands for goodness and the Devil stands for evil. To me that part is not complicated. I believe faith in God is faith in goodness. Many people say “There can’t be a God because if there was such awful things wouldn’t happen. If there was a God there wouldn’t be so much suffering”. My answer to that is what about evil. What about the devil? You can’t ignore the fact that both good and evil exist. You can’t blame God and never blame the devil.

Now when you throw religion into the mix it can get confusing as each faith has different interpretations , beliefs and opinions but almost all faiths are based on the believe that God is good and the devil (evil) is bad. Extreme or radical individuals of any faith in my opinion are misguided and justify evil in the name of God and that is contrary to goodness and wrong.

Acts of nature that cause harm are just that; acts of nature. We live on a planet that is subject to extreme weather and earth quakes. That is the reality of life on earth and not an act of God or the Devil. We have advanced our knowledge enough to scientifically understand these circumstances and no longer need to blame some unknown power. Does God or the devil have the power to cause these events? Nothing in my life time has proven that and in fact most can be explained scientifically so knowledge has given us the ability to understand these events. Something our forefathers did not have. Advanced knowledge and technology.

Once you remove past superstition and ignorance from the equation we are faced with the reality that good and evil resides with-in the individual. Each of us has the power to accomplish good and evil. I have no doubt that there is an on going battle here on Earth between the powers of good and evil. I also believe the battle has yet to be won by either side. The underlying power here on Earth behind all accomplishments good or evil in my opinion is faith. In my opinion the side with the most faith will win. You see from faith comes belief and what the human mind believes the human mind will achieve. The problem is that not all humans are good. Many are evil and misguided and faith and belief in the hands of evil men can be more dangerous than any natural disaster. Just look at Hitler for an example. He died still thinking he was right and that he knew what was good for all mankind. His ideology is still alive today. Hitler had the power for many years to convince the German people he knew what was best for them. That is the power evil has when combined with faith and belief. That power is the greatest threat to mankind today. That power can only be defeated by mankind uniting behind a common belief and faith in goodness. Because most of the world’s population’s belief in goodness is associated and supported by their religious beliefs religion has been the biggest stumbling block to a common belief in goodness or a common God. Each religion believes strengthened by faith that their interpretation of God or goodness is the right interpretation and the only interpretation. Because goodness or God is not united in the battle against evil or the devil. Evil has an advantage over goodness. To quote “United we stand divided we fall” definitely has to come into play.

At this point you are probably wondering why would I a simple man. A lay person with little education or knowledge of the complexities of religion or philosophy try to address such a complicated issue. I do because I have formed an opinion based on my life’s experience and I know from that experience that many people think religion and acts of religious people are a reflection of God and in many cases contradict goodness. It is understandable that many people are confused and  doubt the existence of God. Most of us understand religion can be flawed. There are many examples. Catholic priests abusing children. Muslims committing murder in the name of Allah. Christians murdering doctors who perform abortions. I could go on but you get my point. These acts have nothing to do with God or goodness. They have everything to do with the good and evil with-in us all. Everything to do with the influence of good and evil in our lives. Not all priests are abusers. Not all Muslims are suicide bombers. Not all Christians attack abortion centres or the doctors who perform abortions. In fact most religions are based on goodness and the belief God is good and most religious people are good people.

In my opinion the three most powerful forces on this planet are faith, belief and love. Faith is the only thing nobody can take from you. You can only lose your faith by making a decision to give it up. Belief in that faith gives the human spirit the power to change your life. The lives of the people you love. The power to change the world. Love combined with faith and belief is an unstoppable force for good. When mankind comes together behind a common love of goodness or God combined with faith and belief we will have evolved to the point that we will have the kind of world God intended us to have no matter what our religion. The power to do that is with-in us here on this planet. Not with some unknown force in the universe. It is not easy to be a good person in our world today. It never has been. You have to have faith. You have to believe and you have to persevere. It is so much easier to not get involved in the battle between good and evil. So much easier to just look out for yourself as so many do. I myself believe in goodness or God and have chosen Christ as my mentor. My example of extreme goodness. I have the right to make that decision. I do not have the right to criticize or condemn anyone else’s decision. I do have the right to respect and admire them for being good people and love them for that. I do believe once we all feel the same way humanity will have made the first giant step towards winning the war between good and evil. To those of you who have no faith or belief in God I believe you have the right to make your own choices and I pray at some point in your life you will commit to helping us in our battle for your help is greatly needed. As I come to the end of my days here on this earth I still have faith in the goodness of mankind and I believe that God loves us and instilled in us the ability to overcome evil. I thank Him with all my heart for helping me persevere. May you have a wonderful and rewarding life.
