Make the Devil Your Secretary
Ever noticed whenever you sit to read the Bible, or spend time in prayer, or listen to a sermon, how unrelated thoughts sneak across the screen of your mind?
· You forgot to phone Mary
· Don’t forget about your dental appointment
· What about the money Bill owes you
· You’ll need a new dress for the dance
· You were going to clean out the fridge
· You forgot to buy food for the dog
And on and on it goes!
Without fully realizing it, you now focus on the thoughts. You pay more attention to them than to the activity you were involved with. Suddenly you’re snapped back to reality only to find you don’t remember what you have read, you missed half of the sermon, and you don’t remember what you were praying about. Has this ever happened to you?
Have you stopped to consider the source of those trivial reminders? I suspect it’s the devil up to his tricks of keeping you from focusing on spiritual things. This is where pen and paper would be useful tools to have in your possession. And the next time thoughts begin their parade, quickly write them down. Thank the devil for the reminder…and continue on with what you were doing. In no time the devil would quit his interrupting because he doesn’t like being a plain old secretary!
Now, that’s food for thought! :)
God Bless!
