Deep breathing is vital to the road to recovery

Deep Breathing,

The Path to Health

By Rod Kelly, Ch, Mht

When I mention breathing exercises people naturally think of conditions such as asthma, or respiratory conditions. However most medical & emotional conditions can be improved through healthy breathing practices.

In a recent article by the American Cancer Society, they are currently developing medications that will increase the level of oxygen in the blood, because it has been proven that oxygen does kill cancer cells.

It’s wonderful that they want to develop another pill for us to bring about better health, however there is a more logical solution. Simply, Learn To Breathe More Effectively!

The average person uses about 10 % of their lung’s capacity. This simply equates to 90% of their lungs are filled with stagnant, foul air. It’s like walking into a basement that hasn’t been opened in years. The air is so think it could almost be cut with a knife. Oxygen cells are necessary for the body’s healing abilities to work effectively.

The best way to improve on your breathing is to, first of all, understand how the breathing system works, but also how was our bodies actually designed to deal with breathing.

Its fairly common knowledge that our noses act as a filter to filter out pollutants, and germs. But wasn’t understood is that your nose will filter air in both directions. It will filter the air that is being exhaled just as efficiently as the air that is being inhaled. Simply put… it filters the germs that you body wants to expel just as well as the germs that we don’t want coming into our bodies. When we start coming down with a cold, isn’t one of the first symptoms a plugged nose? That is our body’s defense systems kicking in. If our nose is totally plugged, we have to breathe through an open mouth, right? That allows the body to expel the germs..

So now that we understand a bit more, it will make more sense to understand that we need to inhale through our noses, and exhale through an open mouth. We will be doing a lot with this, so it is important for you to understand the whys of what we are doing.

Exercise #1

Stand tall, and with your arms at your sides, inhale through your nose and fill your lungs up completely. Hold it for couple of moments, and exhale through an open mouth, expelling every speck of air from your lungs… hold a moment and repeat for three more times.

The first thing you will probably experience is that you may become dizzy. That’s because your brain is finally receiving the oxygen that it requires, and nerve endings are becoming stimulated. Just as importantly, every single organ in your body is also receiving this super oxygenated blood. What you are actually doing is kicking your body’s defense systems into a much higher gear. This exercise should be performed a minimum of three times a day.

Exercise #2

Once again, your breathing patterns are your first defense against disease and illness. Take these exercises seriously. Your life could depend on it.

The next exercise is based on the same concept, however instead of taking your time out of your busy schedule, you are going to do this while you are just relaxing while, perhaps watching a tv show, or even reading. When its an hour or so of your own time.

Without changing your breathing patterns, simply inhale through your nose, and exhale through your open mouth, keeping the same tempo and depth of breathing. After the first few moments it becomes almost second nature, and takes very little thought at all. It should be done for a minimum of one hour each day. The more you do it, the more benefits you will receive.
