David Blyth is a New Zealand film director and writer, who has made films in every genre. His early films include Angel Mine, which was notorious for its edgy and controversial social commentary, Death Warmed Up, the horror classic and My Grandfather Is a Vampire, a delightful children's film starring Al Lewis.
All of David Blyth's movies have been original and extraordinary, and his latest film, Transfigured Nights, a 48-minute experimental documentary that 'explores the wildly perverse, fetishistic pleasures of web cam mask performance' is no exception. David Blyth's ahead of its time movie focuses on five men from around the world, who talk about 'the addictive charm of masked webcam performance, erotically liberating, they reveal their secret 'female' lives.' Transfigured Nights might generally seem a bit extreme regarding a person's social life, but its premise illustrates what is already happening in the time of the current "credit crunch". When people can't afford to go out and meet other people, they rely on visual cyberspace for their social lives. This is definitely a film of the future: a few wild steps beyond social network sites like Facebook etc.
Transfigured Nights premiered at the Luasane underground Film Festival and has already been a film festival crowd pleaser at festivals all over the world including the prestigious Fantasia Festival, Montreal 2008.
Jed Town, one of New Zealand's leading audio-visual artists has 'flitted between punk, video-art, ambient electronic and film scores" throughout his fascinating and versatile career. He has provided the score for Transfigured Nights and also other iconoclastic scores for several of David Blyth's films in the past: the documentaries, Fish Tank Telly, and the tear jerker, Our Oldest Soldier, which features Blyth's great grandfather's World War 1 exploits. Jed's' original, haunting and evocative' album, Music for Dungeons, also features as the soundtrack of David's Bound for Pleasure's controversial documentary.
Now Transfigured Nights has its MANGA MAD New Zealand premier on Thursday February 26th at the Moving Image Centre, Galatos off K Road, Auckland at 7.30 p.m. The evening, which will 'evocitically explore Exotic Sex Fantasy Media' promises to be a sell-out. Definitely worth attending for David Blyth's futuristic visuals and Jed Town's sensational sounds. The evening promises to be a sell-out.
