There is no such thing as objectivity in UFO research; this is not a bad thing. The witness is more often than not as invaluable to the investigation as anything else; and the idea that a UFO witness is not objective is simply ridiculous.
I guess “research” should be defined. When it comes to UFOs and the paranormal and Fortean stuff in general, just what is considered research? Is what I do research? Kind of sort of but certainly not in any great way. If anything, I research myself. It’s a self-reflexive thing.
Which brings us to the idea of objectivity/subjectivity. The first thing to get clear about is where one is, philosophically, about being objective. Me, I say no one is objective about anything. It’s all a matter of degrees; of being closer in, or further out, from the center, but never a complete objectivity. So that’s done.
As to me, why does the fact I’ve seen UFOs -- and experienced many high strangeness things with many of them -- make me nonobjective? Nonobjective to what?
There are a few things going on here with this assumption - that one can’t be objective (and its implied belief that one should be objective.) We don’t know what UFOs are in the first place; why would we automatically think objectivity is a pathway to understanding in this case?

It is a matter of personal interpretation, and what one is willing to risk in terms of judgment, as to how objective they are willing to appear, especially if that person is a high profile individual, with a public reputation on the line like Professor Stephen Hawking of Cambridge University in England, who recently made comments that he "discounted UFOs. After all, why should they only be seen by cranks and weirdos?" These remarks were made before a 50th anniversary gathering of NASA in Washington, DC.
I suppose seeing is believing, as I have my own sighting reported to MUFON, and described in my bio here at AD. Thanks for the objective viewpoint. Very refreshing! --- Rockie Coppolella |
