The Impossible Dream…
When you set down to interview David M. Humphrey Sr, the first thing that strikes you is the intensity in his eyes. The second thing that strikes you is a good sense of humor, but the third thing that strikes you is the fact that he should be dead—according to his doctors.
In August of 2001, approximately one month before 9/11, at 1:30 am in the morning, David, a local minister who lived in Lanham, Maryland at the time, had a near fatal heart attack. He drove himself to the hospital, where, after checking his heartbeat, nurses rushed him into a wheel chair and then raced him into the Emergency Room. For David this was nearly the last draw.
Divorced in 1998, losing his mother a year later in 1999, his father having already passed away in 1992, now here he was suffering from the very same thing that had killed his mother. In addition, to top it all off, while in the hospital, the doctors and nurses in their rush to save his life, over-dosed David on one of the many heart medicines flowing through IV’s into his veins. Afterwards, he felt entirely and completely alone. A failure in his own eyes and that of the world, his life was in shambles, he was at the lowest point in his life. He didn’t have anything to live for. He felt no one cared.
Those two words “But God”, have pulled many from the brink of death, despair, sorrow and failure, and God has done the impossible in David’s life. And to hear him share his testimony is not only enough to inspire, but moves you to see our Heavenly Father with new eyes—Faith eyes…
Fast-forward three years. What can God do in such a short time?
David recently a signed a major publishing contract with Moody Publishing, a flagship company in the Christian publishing world. To follow David’s trail from what was almost certainly a ‘death-bed’, to being an author whose book on spiritual warfare has been favorably compared to the works of Mr. Frank Peretti, is simply nothing but a trail of miracles. It is an amazing account of overcoming the impossible through the incredible goodness of God.
David says that he recommitted his life to the Lord that day death came for him. Two years later he finished writing a book that the Lord had given him to write ten years earlier, ‘Dark Things’, a supernatural thriller about spiritual warfare involving African-Americans in Washington, DC. No publisher seemed interested, then the Lord told him to self-publish it. After telling the Lord that he didn’t have that kind of money, and that after the heart attack, his company dropped him from its roles, so he didn’t even have a job anymore, the Holy Spirit showed David, that with God all things are possible.
Without asking, within two days, a friend walked up to David and shared that the Lord had spoken to them to give him $2,000 cash to publish his book. Stunned, he immediately did so through a Christian company named Xulon Press. David’s book was soon on Amazon.com and before long he received an email from someone who had read segments of his book on a special website. They revealed that Moody Publishing had a publishing house dedicated to showcasing quality African-American Christian talent!
They wanted his manuscript.
He sent it to them, they loved it and made him an offer and also were interested in first rights for his next book.
David’s book ‘Dark Things’ is doing well. It was ranked Number One on the Christian Top Ten List of Christian Fiction for 2005 and selected by the same reviewer as 'the best Christian Fiction ever written by an African-American Writer--ever'. God has blessed him and he has been interviewed locally on a local TV program ‘The Ed Brown Show’. David has also had his own show on Bowie Cable Channel 77, called ‘The Warrior’s Agenda’, a show about the topic he is called to teach and train others in, effective Spiritual Warfare. He taught ‘tactical’ Spiritual Warfare for the past two years at The Warrior’s Agenda ‘War College’ in Temple Hills, Maryland, and also has an award winning website, www.thewarriorsagenda.com, a wonderful help meet, and has accepted an offer to move to Texas and teach Spiritual Warfare at a Bible College there.
David’s message is that truly with God, nothing is impossible. And that when others give up on you, and even when you have given up on yourself, God never gives up on you. That He never gives up on His call in your life, nor the dream He has put in your heart… Rom. 11:29, Prov. 19:21.
