Stem Cell research takes another step forward.

An Australian politican, on voting to allow stem cell research in Australia, showed unusually high moral character. "It will enable Australia to stay at the forefront of medical research," Patterson told reporters after the vote. "I didn't see how we could accept any treatment derived from this in the future if we didn't allow the research here in Australia."

The United States allows private funding for embryonic stem cell research but reactionary forces in control of our government have dictated that the possible benefit to sentient sufferers of horrid diseases doesn't morally outweigh the damage that would be done to a relatively few nerveless little blobs of cells (which exist in numbers far too great for the health of a country running out of natural resources due to overconsumption), so Federal funding in this area is disallowed.

Perhaps those who object to embryonic stem cell research in the United States will have the high moral character to abstain from any benefits derived from this kind of research done against their wishes. How could they face a mirror if they do otherwise?

"Perhaps those who object to (...) will have the high moral character to abstain from any benefits derived from this kind of research done against their wishes." - Oh no, they won't, my dearest friend... as you and I very well know (as do so many others, who are likewise bitterly aware that if the world's natural resources could, instead of decreasing, grow more and more from overconsumption, the way hypocrisy seems to, we would all be living in earthly eden...).

We have a saying here that goes - "a good preacher is friar Thomas; heed what he says, but heed not what he does". Just let all those "friar Thomases" come to need what they preach against... ;0)

I'm very happy to read you again, dearest Leland - sharp and lucid, as always.

Love and many {{{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

A very informative and insightful write. Historically, acceptance of controversial theories and practices is always easier after the scientific and moral battles have been fought and lost or won. Those initially against such advances almost always conveniently forget their original opposition during times of personal need.

Well said. Hypocrits abound. People are so willing to be politically and morally correct that they will gladly benefit from what they appose. Reminds me of Christian Scientists who check themselves into hospitals after their maladies become fatal.
