These past few months have been challenging for me, and I appreciate the kind words and thoughts you’ve sent my way. I’ve also received numerous emails and a few letters from you who’ve shared your own struggles and challenges with me. When illness and death strike a family, the very fabric of that family is torn away. Without reliance on eternal truths, the fabric remains torn and has no hope of being mended.

I know that if you and I keep on praying and doing our best, the help will come—from sources that you might not imagine. For more than 20 years, my husband and I struggled to raise our nine children without any reliable source of income. We both hold degrees from Stanford, and he was once paid a six-figure salary as a petroleum geologist. Yet, we were on church welfare many times; we ran several businesses, one of which became very lucrative then failed through a combination of crooked clients and lazy employees—all beyond our control.
I remember weeping and praying then weeping some more. I finally learned to do more praying than weeping. I finally ceased trying to solve all my problems myself. I turned everything over to God. I stood up and fully expected things to get better. They got worse; we filed for bankruptcy, and our house was nearly foreclosed.
Yet, we hung on to each other and our children. Fifteen minutes before the sheriff’s sale, we were able to save our house, because of several of our children, friends, and an anonymous benefactor.
The Player family motto is “Life is a test—to see if you can react positively to negative situations.” We also have a slogan, which we took from Saturday’s Warrior, “Pulling Together We Can Work It Out.”
Today, after years of poverty, we are finally in a more comfortable financial position again, but it didn’t happen until all our children were out the door with established families of their own. All nine have good families and actively participate in our mutual faith. However, all of them are going through challenges and struggles that test and try them, so the problems never end, but problems are part of mortal life. When I look back, I know that God was in charge all the time. He knew what our family needed for each member to succeed.
I came up with the Point System, which has morphed into a program used by hundreds of families around the country—some of them are you, readers of this column. I developed it when our world started crashing down; I think Heavenly Father inspired it because it gave me something more to do than wring my hands over the situation.
So, all of you who’ve written me, stay focused and know that God is on your side. When I’m discouraged, I like to think of an image that speaker and writer Sheri Dew used in one of her talks. She said life was like riding in a car on a foggy night. We have to keep the headlights on to tunnel through the darkness. Faith and a higher power are our headlights.
May your headlights stay bright and lead you through the fog into the light. Thank you for all your kind words and inspiration over the years; keep the comments coming! Contact me through the Messenger or at corrieplayer.hotmail.com.
