HOOKED ON A HORN Wins Award


Fort Pierce - HOOKED ON HORN, Memoirs of a Recovered Musician, the memoir

by Gene Hull, has been awarded a 2006 Royal Palm Literary Prize for Outstanding

Memoir, it was announced by the Florida Writers Association. The FWA awards cash

prizes annually for outstanding books by Florida writers. Hooked On A Horn has been

cited for originality of memoir style and its inspirational quality.

The book recounts the struggles of a young musician who pursues his passion for a

music career, attaining success, until he realizes the time has come to “get off the

moving train.”

As a saxophonist Hull played with several big bands, including Duke Ellington.

Among the famous with whom he worked as band leader, conductor, actor, musician, or

producer were Count Basie, Katherine Hepburn, Leonard Bernstein, Tony Bennett, Vic

Damone, Mel Torme, Tex Beneke, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman and Dave Brubeck.

A former Connecticut and Miami resident, Hull now resides on Florida’s Treasure

Coast with his wife Beverly. He is the father of eight children. His oldest son David is the

current bassist with Aerosmith.
