MANDALA MORPHS INTO A SERIES OF PAINTINGS...

WITH THE SHED AND LAND DISPOSED OF AND A YEAR OF TEDIUM WITH THE P.O./BANK OF IRELAND I AM LIVING IN A TENT WITH £35K IN THE BANK...THIS IS THE EARLY SUMMER OF 2008...WHERE DO I GO NEXT.

MY MOTHER WHO WAS MORE TRAUMATISED THAN ME FROM THE PREVIOUS EVENTS ADVISED ME TO USE THE MONEY TO TRAVEL AS IN 4 YRS I WOULD RECEIVE MY PENSION...I WAS NOW APPROACHING MY 61st BIRTHDAY AND I COULD NOT BUY MUCH (IN THE WAY OF PROPERTY) WITH THE MONEY ANY WHERE IN THE U.K. LET ALONE CORNWALL AND THOUGH I AM AN ACCOMPLISHED TRADESMAN AND STILL "IN THE PRIME OF MY LIFE" I DID NOT STAND MUCH OF A CHANCE TO GET A MORTGAGE...SO ONE OF MY OPTIONS WAS TO GO TO A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY BUY SOME LAND AND BUILD MY OWN HOME/STUDIO BUT I HAD AN AGING MOTHER TO CONSIDER...I WAS HER ONLY RELATIVE IN THIS COUNTRY. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PASSION TO OWN A SMALL PLOT THAT I COULD LIVE ON AND CULTIVATE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES (I HAVE BEEN A VEGAN FOR OVER 40 YRS) BUT THAT WOULD BE OUT OF THE QUESTION IN THIS COUNTRY...SO I WOULD LOOK IN THE LOCAL PRESS TO SEE WHAT "CHEAP" PLACES CAME ON THE MARKET NOT EXPECTING MUCH JOY...AFTER A WHILE A "ONE UP ONE DOWN" FORMER MINERS TERRACED COTTAGE" CAME ON THE MARKET FOR £65K  IN TREWELLARD ON THE NORTH PENWITH COAST WHICH WAS THE CHEAPEST FREEHOLD THAT I HAD SEEN COME ON THE MARKET IN THIS AREA FOR MANY YEARS...IT WAS ACTUALLY THE RESERVE PRICE AS IT WAS GOING TO AUCTION IN A MONTH.

I VEIWED THE PROPERTY AND TOOK TO IT IMMEDIATELY IT WAS SMALL BUT COSY AND HAD BEEN REFURBISHED IN THE PAST 20 YRS SO DID NOT NEED URGENT WORK DONE...OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS I MADE A NUMBER OF OFFERS ABOVE THE RESERVE PRICE AND THE VENDORS FINALLY ACCEPTED AN OFFER OF £81K A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE AUCTION DATE AS I MADE IT CLEAR THAT I WOULD NOT BID AT THE AUCTION IF THEY FAILED TO ACCEPT MY FINAL OFFER...SO IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER I ACQUIRED A SMALL DWELLING PLACE WITH "NO GARDEN" AND MOVED IN WITH A ELDERLY CHAP WHO WAS CAMPING ON THE SAME SITE AS ME AND WHO HAD JUST COMPLETED A YEAR IN "HER MAJESTY'S CUSTODY" AND WHEN I MET HIM HE OWNED JUST WHAT HE CARRIED IN A PLASTIC BAG...HE WAS DESTITUTE BUT HAD A SENSE OF HUMOUR. SO THERE WE WERE ENCAMPED IN THIS COTTAGE WITH A PRIMUS STOVE, A SAUCEPAN, A COUPLE OF PLATES, A BIT OF CUTLERY & 2 SLEEPING BAGS...HE FINALLY LEFT NOT BEING  WILLING TO EAT THE VEGAN FARE THAT I OFFERED HIM & AND NOT LIKING THE ALCOHOL FREE & NON SMOKING HOUSE HOLD.

ONE MAY ASK HOW I PURCHASED A PROPERTY FOR £81K WHEN I ONLY HAD £35K...WELL I WENT A BIT BALLISTIC WHEN THE AGENTS IN HOUSE MORTGAGE BROKERS TURNED ME DOWN FOR A STANDARD MORTGAGE AS I WAS SELF EMPLOYED WITH NO PROOF OF EARNINGS...I SAID " WHAT DO YOU MEAN I AM A TRADESMAN CAPABLE OF EARNING GOOD MONEY AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN ON THE DOLE!" I ADDED THAT I COULD SERVICE A MORTGAGE OF £100/WK STACKING SHELVES OR DOING ANY UNSKILLED WORK WHICH I WOULD DO IF NECESSARY...SO THEY PASSED ME ON TO A INDEPENDENT MORTGAGE BROKER WHO ARRANGED FINANCE FOR ME THOUGH I HAD TO PAY OVER THE ODDS FOR IT. I HAVE NOW BEEN LIVING IN THIS MINERS COTTAGE FOR NEARLY 3 YRS AND HAVE NOT MISSED ANY OF MY MONTHLY PAYMENTS OF JUST OVER £100/WK.

THEN WE COME TO THE ISSUE OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING...I AM LIVING IN AN AREA WHERE THE MAJORITY OF WORKING PEOPLE ARE EARNING JUST ABOVE THE MINIMUM WAGE AND WHERE WE HAVE ONE OF THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF PEOPLE LIVING ON STATE BENEFITS IN THE COUNTRY...THE AVERAGE PROPERTY PRICES ARE FAR HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE SO THE PRESSURE FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IS VERY GREAT...THE LOCAL "BUREAU-BUNIES" HAVE DEEMED THAT £150K FOR A FAMILY DWELLING IS AFFORDABLE...WHAT PLANET ARE THEY LIVING ON. ASSUMING A COUPLE WHO ARE BOTH WORKING HOPING TO START A FAMILY BOTH WITH A STRONG WORK ETHIC AND EARNING BETWEEN THEM £30K/WK (WHICH WOULD BE ABOVE THE AVERAGE FOR A YOUNG COUPLE) WOULD NEED A £60K DEPOSIT TO SECURE A MORTGAGE WHICH WOULD BE BEYOND THEIR MEANS...A SINGLE PERSON WOULD BE IN A EVEN WORSE SITUATION...WHY DON'T THE GOVERNMENT "THINK-OUT-SIDE-OF-THE-BOX" ENCOURAGE SELF BUILD SCHEMES AND GIVE PEOPLE IN NEED THE SAME PLANNING CONSESSIONS THAT THEY GIVE TO BIG PROPERTY DEVELOPERS e.g. ONE OF THE LARGEST HOUSE BUILDERS "BARRETS" ACQUIRED LAND QUITE A FEW YRS AGO IN THE "GREEN-BELT" AROUND LONDON AND PERSUADED THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT TO RELEASE SOME OF THIS LAND FOR BUILDING YUPPY HOUSES ARGUING IT WAS GOOD FOR THE "COMMUNITY"...YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A GENIUS TO MAKE MONEY WHEN SO FAVORABLY TREATED...THE SHARE HOLDERS (& I BET MANY WERE FOREIGN) ARE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK!

I THINK ALL PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO WORK  SHOULD BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUY OR RENT A DESCENT HOME... IT SHOULD BE A "STATUTORY RIGHT"...I THINK IT IS A VIABLE OBJECTIVE EVEN IN THESE TRYING TIMES...THERE JUST HAS TO BE THE WILL TO "DO IT". PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO WORK ON SELF BUILD SCHEMES COULD HAVE AT LEAST 30% EQUITY IN A PROPERTY AFTER WORKING 1-2 YEARS ESPECIALLY IF THE SAME (IF NOT BETTER) CONCESSIONS WERE GRANTED AS ARE GRANTED TO THE "BIG BOYS". TIMBER FRAMED DWELLINGS THAT REQUIRED LESS HIGHLY SKILLED WORKERS COULD BE BUILT IN 3 MONTHS AND PEOPLE WITH LITTLE CAPITAL COULD SUDDENLY FIND THEMSELVES WITH EQUITY AND  USEFULL SKILLS...BY KEEPING OUT THE MIDDLE-MEN AND WORKING WITH A CO-OPERATIVE SPIRIT AS ESPOUSED BY THAT GREAT PIONEER "ROBERT OWEN"... DESPERATE TIMES CALL FOR DESPERATE MEASURES...I HAVE WORKED AS BUILDER MOST OF MY LIFE HAVE TRAVELLED MUCH AND OBSERVED HOW THEY DO THINGS IN OTHER COUNTRIES...THIS IS NOT "A PIPE DREAM"!

AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR SALE/RENT ON LAND OWNED BY A LOCAL "CHARITABLE COMMUNITY LAND TRUST" NOT ENCUMBERED BY DEBT AND TO BE OWNED BY THE COMMUNITY IN PERPETUITY SHOULD BE THE OBJECTIVE...IT CAN SUCCEED WHERE COUNCIL ESTATES OF THE PAST FAILED...THERE SHOULD BE A PROVISO THAT THE HOUSING & WORK SPACE SHOULD BE PRIMARILY FOR LOCALS (SAY FOR EXAMPLE THAT THEY HAVE LIVED IN THE AREA FOR AT LEAST 5 YRS)...SO THERE SHOULD  BE A COMPLETE MIX OF SOCIAL CLASSES WITH OWNERS & RENTERS...I HAVE EXPERIENCE FIRST HAND THAT ESTATES WITH INPUT & BUILT BY LOCALS ARE RESPECTED BY THE RESIDENTS AS A WHOLE AND REMAIN IN PRISTINE CONDITION...RETIRED PROFESSIONALS AND TRADE-PERSONS WOULD BE MORE THAN WILLING TO OFFER THEIR SERVICES FOR FREE PROVING THAT ALTRUISM IS INDEED A HUMAN TRAIT AND THAT PIONEER OF ALTERNATIVE THINKING OUT-SIDE OF THE BOX "ROBERT OWEN" WOULD BE A GREAT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION...IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE LAND SHOULD NEVER INCUR ANY DEBT THUS ASSURING THAT THE PROPERTIES WOULD REMAIN AFFORDABLE FOR EVER AS THE LAND WILL BE OWNED BY "THE COMMUNITY"...IF SOMEBODY BUILDS A HOUSE THEN LATER SELLS IT THEY WILL MAKE A PROFIT FROM THEIR EFFORTS NOT FROM "SPECULATION"...STARTER HOMES SHOULD BE BUILT THAT ALLOW FOR EXPANSION AS A FAMILIES GETS BIGGER OR WHEN FINANCES ALLOW AND ALL BUILDING METHODS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WITH AN EMPHASIS SUSTAINABILITY AND PROPER RECYCLING (NOT THE VERY UNPROFESSIONAL WAY THINGS ARE CURRENTLY DONE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY THAT IS A NATIONAL SCANDAL)...THE LIKES OF SIR PHILIP GREEN COULD DONATE £200 MILLION AS A BIT OF SEED MONEY TO ACQUIRE LAND FOR "THE TRUST" & THE BANKERS COULD DONATE UNTOLD OF MILLIONS AND ALL THESE "NOUVEAU RICH CELEBRITIES" COULD ALSO DO THEIR PATRIOTIC BIT AND THROW IN A BIT OF "LOOSE CHANGE" AND LET US BUILD A  "MODERN DAY CAMELOT" THAT THE PEOPLE RESPECT AND BE PROUD OF...AMEN.

SO BACK TO THE MORPHING MANDALA...NOW ENTRENCHED IN MY NEW DWELLING PLACE AND HAVING ACQUIRED BASIC FURNITURE FROM A CHARITY SHOP I EMBARK ON A SERIES OF PAINTINGS MUCH IN THE SPIRIT OF THE CREATION OF MANDALAS, KOLAMS, YANTRAS, TALISMANS ETC DONE IN VARIOUS CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD...FROM MID-SUMMER OF 2008 UNTIL EARLY SUMMER OF 2009 I WAS VERY PROLIFIC WITH THE PAINTING UNTIL LIKE A SLEDGE-HAMMER I WAS SLAMMED WITH THE URGE TO DESTROY ALL THE IMAGES THAT I HELD IN STOCK IN MY TREWELLARD STUDIO WHICH I DID ON MID SUMMERS DAY OF THAT YEAR.
