A list of ten ideas to help stay involved with your child's education all year.

1. Talk with your child everyday about what happens at school. Share with them an enthusiasm for learning and working hard.

2. Join the PTA.

3. Attend Open House, and Parent Teacher Conferences.

4. Check assignments books everyday to make sure assignments are completed. Work with your child to devlop the life-long trait of responsibility.

5. Make sure your son/daughter arrives at school rested (most children need 10 hours of sleep a day) and ready to learn. Children should have a nourishing breakfast every morning.

6. Keep in touch with your child's teacher. Look for Parent Bullentins, Classroom Newsletters, and weekly correspondence.

7. Volunteer at school. Contact your son's/daughter's teacher in advance to see how you can help.

8. Read with your child every everyday or make sure your child has a book that he/she is reading for enjoyment. Modeling reading at home is also important.

9. Attendance, Attendance, Attendance ... establishing a pattern of excellent attendance is key to all children's success. Children should not miss more than 5 days of school a year.

10. Tell your children that you are proud of them. School can be tough and growing up is not always easy. Tell your child that you believe in him/her and that you are there for them

I think you might have missed your calling! I see the natural born teacher coming out in you in so many of your writings! However, you are doing a wonderful job writing. Very helpful article.

Good advice. Maybe I'll do it all over again if I can find someone to cooperate.

Good work, Victoria. We have a 4 YO toddler who will start next year in Pre-Primary (he'll turn five on April 18).

I am a teacher myself and am very much aware of the importance of the points raised by you. They are SO VERY important and the tragedy for some kids is that their parents don't have time to get involved to the extent recommended by your list. "Too busy, what with work and catching up on domestic duties". I'm afraid lots of modern lifestyles don't cater for these very important childhood needs. Although, I think more people are waking up and ordering their priorities in more child-friendly ways.

Let's hope your article gets lots of quality exposure.

Excellent advise...would that parents would be consistent in committing to maintaining a presence at their child's school.
