Joanna is a friend of mine. Note: Not her real name. Its far from easy, but Joanna is coping with her FMS and MCS. This article is about her symptoms and how she successfully deals with them. She very graciously gave me permission for me to interview her about her conditions. I tried to go easy on her since part of her fibromyalgia syndrome condition is chronic fatigue. From what I understand what I read on FMS and CFIDS is that the main simularity is that they both involve significant fatigue and muscle pain. The major difference is that CFIDS is where the fatigue is worse than the muscular discomfort. FMS is the opposite, the muscular discomfort is the main complaint and not the fatigue. That is not to imply extreme exhaustion is not an issue in the latter.
Well now on to my woman friend. Joanna works as an assistant to the director of a local mental illness/drug and alcohol agency. Fortunately she can function with her disabilities. However it is far from easy. For one thing she can not tolerate any artificial smells. I don't mean that she just dislikes them. They make her severely ill with wheezing, worsening of her fibromyalgia and severe allergy symptoms. Most perfumes, colognes, body lotions sickens her.
Joanna's symptoms are especially prone substances that are pretochemically based. This aspect is true of many other's like her.
However anything natural can she tolerate. She is also is allergic to cats. I asked her. She's not certain if its their dander or something else about felines. She has other allergies too.
Her FMS mostly adversely effects her hands and knees. She said she feel pain and weakness in those parts of her body.
Like many woman with her and closely related disabilities her health problems flare up even more so during her pre-menstrual and menstrual times of the month.
She also complained about how many conventional doctors don't know about these illnesses or simply dismiss as psychosomatic or psychiatric.
She knows that is is for real whenever she goes outside and has to wear a carbon filter mask to protect from the car exhaust fumes!!!
Fortunately she found a naturapath who knows that she is really suffering and even more fortunate has the expertise to help her.
If you are interested I will ask her what works for her. I realize that everyone is an individual. However maybe what is effective for her may help you.
I wish Joanne well.
