From September 11 to date, I wanted to share with you the reactions/comments I got from family, friends, co-workers, strangers, associates, anyone......who had something to say.
I found it! I found it! My immediate outburst after my co-worker called in to ask me to track what floor her friend in New York worked in at building one of the World Trade Center. (He worked on the 34th floor. He was accounted for)
Bin Laden did a bad thing. He should be spanked. Beauty shop customer’s granddaughter, age 2
What did we do to deserve this? Calvin, age 7
When will we get back to normal TV? This is so depressing. I don’t want to hear any more. I know people were killed, hurt and died. Everyone keeps talking and talking and talking about this. Terri, age 12
My God, they’re coming to KILL US! The reaction of a 13-year-old student after seeing a plane fly overhead while walking to Mass. She dropped to her knees crying out, “I don’t want to die!”
My co-workers are either quitting or calling in sick. They are afraid to work security in the building I am in. Danny, age 19 (works one of the financial buildings)
Let’s not kill Bin Laden. He should be tortured. Karen, age 24
I can’t come in to work today. I am so overwhelmed by all that has happened. I can't listen to that TV for another 8 hours. Message left on my answering machine by a co-worker who called in sick on 9/12. Age 31 (We work at a Newspaper in the Editorial section which means we have direct access to TV coverage)
Go look in the mirror. You’ll see your terrorist. American is not totally innocent. Sandra, age 37
Now is the safest time to fly. If you sneeze you would have at least 4 security officers to deal with. Willis, age 42
I am scared to come out of my home. I jump if I hear the slightest noise. Tammy, age 42.
I got my purse in one hand and my bat in the other. You WILL have a fight on your hands once our building is evacuated. DC resident who works 4-6 blocks away from the White House. Dorothy, age 48
I haven’t stopped crying yet. Kim, age 52
My knees are still knocking. I had booked flight 11 for my wife and I to leave for our vacation that Tuesday 9/11. My wife later had me change the date to Wednesday. I have to tell you I wasn’t happy about it at the time. I’m thanking God now that she won that argument. Richard, age 56.
None of this would have happened if Bill Clinton were in office. Katy, age 61
This tragedy has brought people together. Strangers are now neighbors speaking to each other. (DC resident, Roberta, age 84)
My heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out the all the victims and their families of this senseless tragedy. I can’t help but believe that young Christine Hanson of Massachusetts, age 2 died engulfed by both her parents love. Cles

A very nice remiding article I love the title and the way you reminded us all how tragic all is. I must say I'm in agreement with Katy
Thanks so much this is really hitting the gut and heart hard here as if it were happening today.
may we remember always each moment of everyday the soldiers on the bases and in combat all who are defending us to keep our peace and freedom for us to all be safely here today and all their innocent lives still being lost today, their freedom and normal everyday lives they leave behind for us.

| Fascinating quotes and reactions...some funny, some poignant and others strange. I think Karen's partly right in that we must eradicate bin Laden and numerous other terrorists, but not torture them. I think Sandra and Katy's quotes were the most troubling - the USA's "Crime" has been its oil dependence which has made a group of thugs wealthy. We need to develop a cheap, renewable fuel source (perhaps corn or soy based) and cut these OPEC nations off and let'em drink their oil. As for Katy's view, "This would never have happened if Bill Clinton were in office," that's both funny & sad. Funny in that it's so misguided - Clinton gutted the CIA, froze out Louis Freeh, then FBI Director and trashed the military (see Black Hawk Down - it was demoralizing that we didn't level Mogadishu after that attack). Still, it's intersting to see such varied reactions. // Nice work. |
