Heath Nutrition Pleasure Principles Pain Truth
The sacrifice that God desires today is the sacrifice of praise, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to Him.
African Proverb: Avoid taking hasty actions that will show that you are foolish
(The Beautiful…Dagme People).
It is amazing how most folks ignore the obvious, when it comes to optimal nutritional-health. We’re deeply consumed in principles of “Pleasure,” that we ignore the “Pain.”
Who knoweth whether he will not turn and repent, and leave a blessing behind him, even a meal offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?
Now you know… It’s very difficult (i.e., it pains us!) to leave food on our plates! Tell the truth!
Think about this scenario:
“Consuming a plate of hot, spicy, baby back ribs loaded with extra Kansas City Barbecue Sauce… I do not reframe myself to consider the negative impacts…this meal has on my heart and love handles (it’s all about being sexy). But, I know one thing is going to happen after I add a little potato salad, butter corn bread, and sweet North Carolina Ice Tea to this treat of mine; I am going to sleep real well.” (Thanks for the visual…Mr. O. James!) In addition, “Yes, I always move in the direction of “Pleasure” or satisfying my self over “Pain,” which is resisting my desire to please self. Like most Americans, I enjoy the pleasure of food.” (La’rd da’ mercy!)
On the flip-side…
Is it really that painful…to make quality food choices? Well…for some it is more ridiculous to buy lunch at the salad bar; than to eliminate lunch by eating a breakfast that sticks to your insides (i.e., like them southern cheese grits).” Yeah…wash it down, with some OJ, and Bacon. (Stop it!)
With rising food prices (i.e., economic instability), the decision to make quality food choices forces “folk” to rethink their situation. This thought was suggested to me…by someone (i.e. a stranger) on the train this morning! See… That’s why…I got to write about this stuff!
Q: Are you forced to think about your economic situation as it relates to increasing food prices, and quality food choices? Are you dammed if you do, and dammed if you don’t?
What should you do?
First, you need to understand – what are the risk factors associated with your actions, in most cases, it’s the inaction or inactivity that causes strife (i.e., the struggle/conflict).
The next step, is to consider the benefits (i.e., I call this, having an Reward Consciousness). Knowing this should provide significant motivation and inspiration for action.
It is through our best efforts that success is guaranteed.
Dr. O’s Tips:
It is possible to make difficult and some times unpopular food choices. Just the thought of consuming foods that are not going to be fulfilling is painful enough to result in dietary disengagement. Certain behaviors are expected when you’re hardwired to fail…the more you develop certain rituals…and follow them religiously (La’rd da’ mercy!), especially in moments of uncertainty (i.e. survival mode) success is guaranteed.
For example, on your way home from worship service…you got to stop at a (fill in the blank); and try to pick-up something wholesome for yourself and the kids-like milk, yogurt, and/or cheese. Next, you try not to pass-by the doughnut case (or whatever) near the cash register; given your old habits (i.e., the one...two...switcher-rue!). (Stick to your guns!)
Q: How many parents would’ve snatched-up a couple donuts, candy, and cold drinks for the kids-from the start? Sounds familiar…
What's the point?
It’s for you to decide; it’s about you actively engaging in behaviors that are tailored to cope with different events that may arise.
Q: Were those doughnuts (or whatever)...calling the kids? Maybe! (I don't know...and most of the times I do care!)
However... Are you looking-out for them, and there needs or expectations (i.e., for sitting through worship with you!). Hey kids…”I’m sorry…the pastor got a little winded today-okay!”
Don’t want them to cry-huh? You’re sparing them the pain and sacrifice-right?
Don’t do it.
Consider this way of thinking in terms of cost-benefit analysis (i.e., perceived risk)! Your actions should be based on objective/productive behaviors (rituals), a protocol (i.e., written plan), and/or benefits (i.e., Reward Consciousness...you want them to enjoy worship service).
Does food feel so good…to cause you to sacrifice your life? Some food related diseases are preventable through nutrition. Why are we still talking about Hypertension, Diabetes, Cancer, and Obesity; as theses diseases are PREVENTABLE through food and nutrition?
Pain or Pleasure? Only you can decide!
Warm Regards,
Dr. O.
