Fallacies purported network media for the week of April 2

Sunday morning talk-shows can make a pessimist of even the most optimistic among us.  If you are a Christian, they can be quite depressing.  Sunday morning is one time that you can find out what liberals really think, because they don‘t expend much effort hiding their crazy ideology.  ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopolis, featured conservative Ann Coulter to join their “roundtable” discussion of  the week’s most-reported events, and Ms. Coulter did not disappoint.

Before long, the discussion turned from presidential politics to the Trayvon-Zimmerman shooting that occurred in Florida.  At the introduction, ABC’s Terry Moran blasted Florida’s “Stand Your Ground law” as a big and important part of the problem with legal gun ownership and use, claiming that these cases should be determined by a jury, but the law “takes the jury out of the equation.”  Ann Coulter quickly pointed out that the law is irrelevant to the case because, despite which set of circumstances one chooses to believe, that of George Zimmerman or that of Martin’s girlfriend, the law did not impact the case.  George Zimmerman was authorized to use deadly force to protect himself, not merely because he was standing his ground, but because he was being beaten.

This is a favorite tactic of liberals--to blow up a single anecdotal event, and make it appear so heinous that only radical changes to the law can end the controversy.  The swift emotional current must be resisted, however.  This is the same tactic liberals used to convince the Supreme Court that state laws limiting abortions must be overturned.  The anecdotal evidence offered by the pro-abortion lobby, was that illegal abortions performed with coat hangers were rampant, and the only way to stop them was to abolish abortion laws.  The truth is that there was not then, (1973) and there is not now, an epidemic of such gruesome illegal abortions, as suggested by abortion advocates.  Then, there was the possibility that a child could be conceived as a result of rape or incest--a situation where compassion demanded making abortions legal.  But once again, it was a ruse.  The fact is that conception rarely occurs in these cases.  But even when it does, ending an innocent life is not a compassionate choice.  But that’s an issue for another day.

It is never good to change laws in the middle of an emotional controversy.  The chance of making the matter worse is a real probability.  The February 26th shooting of Trevino Martin was a tragedy regardless of the circumstances.  One in which law enforcement officers found no evidence that showed that George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin without provocation or legal authorization.  But Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who involved themselves only after the national media picked up the story, are only fanning the embers of racism, ensuring a protracted and bitter resolution at best.  Either way, the Stand your Ground law is not to blame for Trayvon Martin’s death.  Only if police are able to obtain new information from the cell-phone records of Trayvon Martin’s girlfriend, or another witness comes forward, will the truth be revealed.

“The extreme irony,” says Matthew Dowd, “is that the same people who support prayer in schools and want a Christian nation support this law.  What happened to ‘turn the other cheek?’”‘  The truth is that there is no irony here.  Christians are to be “wise as serpents.”  There is no question that violent crimes are commonplace today.  A situation in which one’s life is threatened, is not an appropriate time to “turn the other cheek.“ It is exactly because we value life, that we take lawful steps to defend it.  The ignorance of the left about the Christian faith is astounding.

On NBC’s Meet the Press, in a discussion about rising gasoline prices, like tossing out a hand-grenade, leftist, Mika Brzezinski threw out the fact that Exxon-Mobile made $9 billion last year.  So what?  What relationship can there possibly be between the number of dollars made by one of the biggest energy corporations in America and a discussion of record-high gasoline prices?  Ironically, the voice of reason was a black former Congressman, Harold Ford, Jr. who pointed out that, contrary to the belief of the left, oil company profits are not inherently evil--that much of that money pays dividends to stock holders, (many of whom are Exxon employees), and that their profits enable the company to locate and develop new oil reserves.   Greedy Democrat politicians would like nothing better than to steal that money and spend it on new ways to keep themselves in power.

The truth is that Exxon-Mobile’s earnings have nothing whatsoever to do with high oil prices.  High oil prices are a direct result of bad Democrat energy policies that, for the past eight years, have contained no energy, only restrictions.

America is sitting on one of the richest oil reserves in the world, but we continue to see record high prices because the left interferes with every attempt to tap those reserves or to build new refineries.  We are now importing more gasoline than ever before, simply because America does not have the refining capacity that we need.

Those on the left despise business, even though businesses like Exxon-Mobile employ thousands of people and pay huge taxes and fees while providing fuel for our automobiles.  The fact that oil companies are still profitable despite the attempts of the left to put them out of business, is a miraculous economic success story, not a dark sinister secret plot.   Americans have got to end this obsession some have, with the earnings of Exxon-Mobile or any other company for that matter.  We certainly don’t need any government official dictating how much money a business can make before the government begins confiscating it.

What many people fail to realize is that a threat to anyone’s freedom today, becomes a threat to all our freedoms tomorrow, whether the issue is defending oneself, or the right to earn money.
