With life buzzing by at such a fast pace, how does one find let alone keep their balance? Knowing what our ideal balance is and taking time for ourselves are the first steps.

It’s so easy to feel out of balance these days with what’s going on in our lives and in the world around us. With all of our to do lists and schedules and meeting other people’s expectations and agenda’s, when do we have time to just sit, relax and enjoy being in the present moment. Our moments seem to go by too fast.

In all our efforts to speed things up and create more efficiency through faxes, email and cell phones in order to create free time for ourselves, we’ve actually just created additional time to cram more busyness into. There’s just that many more calls and emails to respond to. And throughout it all we seem to have become so externally focused that we’ve disconnected from ourselves. We forget to breathe. We don’t listen to our bodies let alone our hearts. We stop taking care of ourselves and begin to feel overwhelmed, frazzled and out of control.

Now more than ever, is when we need to take time for ourselves. To slow down and replenish ourselves and decide how we really want our days to flow. For if we don’t give first to ourselves we’ll have nothing left to give to others, our families, our friends, our careers, our communities.

It all starts with knowing what your ideal balance would look and feel like. Everyone is unique and has different degrees of mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs in order to feel balanced and healthy. Try spending five or ten minutes with your eyes closed to get a sense of what an ideal balance would be like for you. Envision how your day would go if you were balanced. Then see a week and then a month with you living a balanced life. Set your priority to have this balance in your life.

Once you’ve set the intention for the type of balance you’d like to have, then it’s a matter of identifying what supports you and what limits you from having this on an ongoing basis. Often it involves shifting stress reaction styles and behaviour patterns that have kept you going down the same old path. Do you respond to stressful situations by acting out with panic, drama, fear, or blaming? Or are you more likely to shut down feeling helpless or to hide from situations like an ostrich?

How you deal with demands, pressures and problems will determine how balanced you are in life. Adopting new healthier ways of looking at situations and responding to life’s ups and downs can take you in a whole new direction. Play with responding differently to stressful situations. Practice ease instead of effort. Imagine a positive outcome instead of a catastrophe. Breathe in instead of screaming out. Take action instead of procrastinating. Find your amusement instead of your anger. Be grateful for the growth opportunity instead of begrudging the problem.

As you connect more deeply to yourself and become aware of your thoughts, emotions and reactions, you will also increase your awareness of you inner wisdom. This will help you to slow down, respond effectively and embark on a healthier, happier and more uplifting journey through life.

I like the last paragraph. It tells all. I do like the computer and find answering e-mails not stressful but good therapy for me. Many find it an overload but I take it in stride and delete things I don't want to read and stay on the den for hours a day and love it. It is a soothing therapy for me getting in touch with people whenever I can. Thanks this above your wrote is good advice to follow though.
