Poetry Fundraiser Features Amiri Baraka & Etan Thomas - (6/2006)
By J. Joy Matthews Alford - Sistah Joy

In June of 2006, Amiri Baraka and Etan Thomas are interviewed by Sistah Joy at a poetry fundraiser in Prince George's County. The interviews would become a segment of an upcoming episode of Sojourn With Words, the poetry-based cable television program hosted and co-produced by Sistah Joy.

"At an evening of literary excellence in Prince George's County last week, area businesses, members of the poetry community and area residents welcomed poets and poetry into their midst. The DC WritersCorps collaborated with The Boulevard at Capital Centre to present The Blvd At The Capital Centre Poetry Slam Jam Fundraiser...Baraka opened his remarks to a standing ovation. ...Legacies and realities were the overriding messages throughout his readings, which included "improvisational jazz-laced" excerpts from his book, "Un Poco Low Coup", and the controversial title poem from his book, "Somebody Blew Up America! & Other Poems." Presenting works that enlightened, inspired and ignited the audience, Baraka's poetry was embraced by youth and elder alike. The poetry slam pitted the unbridled passion of youth against the seasoned wisdom of age, introducing to some, but welcoming back to most, Washington Wizards Center, Etan Thomas, author of the highly successful book of poetry, More Than An Athlete.Thomas, also deft in his presentations, mesmerized the audience with his fluid word-mastery, free-flowing as if from a reservoir of awareness that seemed well beyond his years..."
