In the movie SALT, Angelina opens her SURVIVAL bag and puts the contents on the bed. There are weapons, extra bullet clips, laptop, and three inches of CASH.
Without cash, Angelina couldn't even get to her destination to accomplish her mission.

All American fighter pilots since WW 2 have carried gold coins in their survival kit. Gold is recognized even by primitive man in the jungles. Gold will give you more chance of survival than a gun.
Bottom line: Cash and gold is a must for your family survival kit. And not cash in the bank. ATM machines turn off during an earthquake. (They think they are being tampered with.)
