Gone Fishing,An Excerpt from Sugar Rush:Love’s Liberation
Like a flash from the sky,
She illuminated my soul.
She kept me jolted while time stood still.
My quest was in vain, but only for a moment.
My angelfish may swim
But only to my shore.
I will let the cool water splash
On her scales until they soften and become soft.
She will be flesh of my flesh.
I was certain that beneath her hard shell Dolly housed a warm heart. I can’t blame her for being cautious. She didn’t know me from a hole in the wall. At the same time, I never had a problem getting a date on the second attempt. I realized I was dealing with a different type of woman, but I kept my bait on the hook. She wasn’t going to get too far before this fisherman reeled her in for the taking.
I returned from the front of Blackplatinum to pack up my instrument and bid my fellow band members adieu. Jupiter and I were heading out together. It was almost in the morning and this cat was wearing dark shades as if he was the new recruit in the Matrix.
“Neo, you are the one,” I said jokingly in my best attempt to sound like Lawrence Fishburn.
“Man, I know you’re not talking with yo black leather on in September lookin’ like you’re a part of the Trench Coat Mafia,” Jupiter teased while slapping me on the back.
He reminded me of an older Samuel L. Jackson with hair and a full beard. Since I joined the band, he was the one person to take me under his wing to help me soar. The former sax player, Fingaz, was a household hit. So I was constantly hazed by the band to make sure I was a good replacement.
Fingaz left because he decided to be a family man and his wife had given birth to their first born. It probably wasn’t a good idea for Fingaz to be in the streets of D.C. after nine’ o’clock with a newborn depending on him.
“So, you’re after Dolly Hunter, eh?” Jupiter asked while opening the back door of the club. We were headed to the alley where our cars were parked.
“Is that her name?”
“Come on man, stop puttin’ on like your impromptu set this evening was a coincidence. Doll’s House, an off the cuff jam? Yeah right!”
“My interest is evident, huh?”
“Sax, the drool is still slidin’ out the corner of yo mouth.”
“Is it really?” I asked while wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. It very well could be there. Dolly was the object of my affection even if for a few hours. She was eye candy and I wanted to know how sweet her mind and soul would taste.
“I’ve known Doll for, hmm, let’s just say I know her pretty well,” Jupiter remarked with a grin.
“What’s up with the smirk, Bruh?”
“Doll is an interesting catch. She’s a passive predator.”
“She looks intimidating. All eyes watching and observing. However, she’s just as scared of her prey as they are of her. She’s more vulnerable than you think.”
“What prey? Is she some kind of black widow or something? ‘Cause she didn’t seem vulnerable back in the
club.” I pointed behind me.
“She’s more like a house spider. She has a comfort zone and leaves it long enough to be visible. When she’s done lookin’ ‘round she decides whether or not she wants to be seen. Doll will either stick around to build a web or retreat to her hole in the wall never to be seen again. Just know that she’s still
“Oh! She’s been hurt in the past and now she’s protective
of her heart?”
“Exactly! She’ll let you in, but just enough to find a fault.
If she likes you, well, she’s the type of woman who will give you the world ten times over. Just don’t cross her.”
“Why didn’t you just say that in the first place?” I shook my head.
“Come on, man, you know me. I’m Jupiter.”
“Oh, how could I forget?”
“Look, Sax, I think you’re a nice guy. So this info is for free. Doll likes to visit Blackplatinum on Friday nights. You might try your luck next week.” I nodded. He continued. “Do what you will with the information I gave you. In the meantime, I have a lady in Zion to save in this here spaceship.”
I tapped one of his front tires with my right foot. “Yo, man, I think your ship is about to sink. You need some new tires. They’re a little burned out.”
“Sax,” he began while getting in his car, “I always keep fresh rubbas so I won’t get burned out. Ya dig?” He winked at me and shut the car door. Jupiter was such a dirty old man. I guess that’s how he finds his rhythm on the drums.
“Man, go home to your wife.”
Jupiter rolled down the window to give me a pound and we headed our separate ways. His helpful hints on Operation Doll House allowed me to plan my next moves. I’m a writer and a business man. So, it won’t be too hard for me to create a way to catch my angel in blue. My persistence alone will get me what I want. If all else fails, my music will send her floating into my arms. Regardless of the outcome, I was willing to take
the risk. I just needed to set the reel in motion.
