Where do story ideas come from?
I was walking around the Assabet River Wildlife Refuge which had been recently opened to the public. It was previously an Army Depot.
Through the trees I saw a boarded up house so I followed the gravel road up to the house. There, similar to its description in my book, I saw a boarded up door beside an 'open' window. I stepped through the window and walked 10 paces or so in then back out. While I was there, I saw a small stair case and I started to wonder what happened to the occupants. My imagination took the story far beyond the truth to the abandoned house.
After my book was published, an article appeared in the newspaper, The Beacon Villager, about me. A man who used to live in Refuge, before it was a refuge, and before the government took it over, contacted the paper to determine if the house was his. Although the house in questions wasn't his childhood home, I corresponded with him and learned some of the history of his childhood and how upsetting it was for his family to be forced out of their homes.
