My father Andor Szentivanyi outwitted the leadership of Florida's university system in the mid-1980s!

                       My father Andor Szentivanyi was one of the most brilliant political operators at The University of South Florida.  His enemies totally underestimated him.

                       Two decades ago, USF's pediatric's department couldn't recruit scholars because they didn't have enough pediatric beds.  USF's central teaching hospital Tampa General Hospital underfunded pediatrics because pediatricians didnt bring in big bucks.

                       St. Petersburg's power brokers used their political muscle to block construction of a Tampa Children's Hospital.  They didn't want anyone competing against All Children's Hospital.

                        Andor Szentivanyi who was at the time Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of Medicine came up with an ingenius solution to the problem.

                       He established a second Department of Pediatrics at All Children's Hospital and appointed Robert A. Good as founding Chair.  Robert A. Good {Time Coverman, President of Sloan-Kettering, Pioneer of Bone Marrow Transplants, Co-discoverer of the T Cell} had been a super star in immunology but because of a scandal at Sloan-Kettering many people viewed him as damaged goods, pardon the pun.

                       When the State of Florida granted a Certificate of Need  for a Tampa Children's Hospital, the Szentivanyi plan seemed to be working.  However, opponents of All Children's Hospital launched a disinformation campaign against Good and ACH and my dad.

                       My dad's critics were so obsessed they hired a detective to dig up dirt on him.  They telaphoned The Children's Medical Board to complain about Good's qualifications.

                       They challenged Good's exemption from taking the Florida Medical Board on ethical grounds.  {The Florida Medical Board granted every medical school the power to request an exemption for one outstanding physician scholar.}

                       Dad was forced to resign from the adminstration while his sucessor Donn L. Smith excoriated Good and ACH.  An editorial writer of The Tampa Tribune implied Robert Good wasn't worth money.

                       Donn L. Smith referred to Robert Good as that Jew in St. Petersburg and he wasn't even Jewish.

                       The Tampa Children's Hospital did get built but not at USF.  However, the disinformation campaign against Robert A. Good failed because nobody especially not the leaders of USF's Medical School anticipated a revival of Good's name.

                        Two years after joining USF Robert A. Good won The John Howland Award from The American Pediatric Society and in 1987 not one USF pediatrician could say the same thing.

                      Robert A. Good passed away in 2003 but he is not forgotten.   Harvard Medical School established in his memory The Robert A. Good Lbrary

                     All Children's Hospital after years and  years of undermining by USF Health, affiliated with John's Hopkins University.

                      To this day USF doesn't have a children's hospital.
