The group PETA was born because its founder Alex Pacheco found monkeys living in horrible conditions at The National Institute of Mental Health in Silver Springs Maryland but contrary to popular belief the research was very valuable. It was designed to help quadriplegics learn to use artificial limbs. I researched Dr. Taub's background to test my theory that he is a serious scientist as opposed to an opportunist who torments animals for no reason.
I found out that Dr. Taub not only has a huge publication record in peer reviewed journals but that his work gets numerous citations. Four of his papers have been cited over three hundred times and two of them over four hundred. His work has appeared in some very prestigious places including Nature and Science. Inspite of Taub's huge contributions to science, he was arrested for animal cruelty as a result of Pacheco's investigation.
I heard about him when he joined the faculty of UAB {University of Alabama at Birmingham} fifteen years ago. UAB wouldnt be stupid enough to take the heat on Taub unless he made a significant scholarly contribution. There were even demonstrations on UABs campus against Taub's appointment. I tried to convince the Birmingham News to cover the controversy over Taub but it didn't interest them.
Beside PETA's one sided attack on NIMH, I was also soured on the animal rights movement because of Peter Singer. Singer is a nutty ivy league philosopher who believes people should be allowed to marry animals.
One very well known animal rights fanatic Ingrid Newkirk said that in the greater scheme of things people are animals and all animals are equal.
Last but not least, a terrorist group known as the Animal Liberation Front has been attacking research fascilities. According to CBS's newsmagazine 60 Minutes an offshoot of ALF is the number one domestic terrorist threat. Destroying buildings and harrassing scholars antagonizes people who are least receptive to animal rights and need the most patience.
On the other hand, my dad was close friends with a brilliant scientist named Bogan. Bogan finished a PhD from Princeton University and founded a basic science department at a state university medical school. He came from a modest background and got himself an ivy league education. He worked his way up the ladder to become a department department chair and even an associate dean in a professional school dominated by MDs.
I wanted to ask dad about Bogans's brilliant research but by that time he and Bogan had a falling out. I searched and searched scientific journals before finally finding his work. To my shock and horror, Bogan studied shock by bleeding dogs to death. Furthermore, Bogan's publication record is nothing like Dr. Taubs. Some of Bogan's research papers have not been cited one single time.
While PETA overreacted to Dr. Taub's experiments at NIMH, they also may have saved countless animals from terrible suffering. Furthermore, PETA's expose of NIMH did force much needed reform in medical science and also PETA's expose inspired other reformers to seek jobs in medical science to uncover animal abuses.
