The mass media in concert with fiscal conservatives is getting a good laugh at the expense of The Lobster Institute. The Lobster Institute is a mostly privately funded facility at The University of Maine that researches conservation and marketing of America's most loved shellfish.
The media is jumping on the tiny 188k in the latest budget that goes to this institute. It makes for a great visual {A lobster tank with creepy insect type creatures crawling around} but this is poor journalism.
I like eating lobster but I could live without it. I am ANGRY not because I cry for people's palates but for society. This is one industry that can't be taken over by imports except maybe Canada.
While the poultry and beef industries rely on cheap hourly workers from across the boarder this industry is American and making money.
The chicken and beef industries are barbaric and bad for the environment but lobster fishermen are generally eco-friendly. Fishermen have a dangerous job but its not like meat packing or poultry plants where machines cut off limbs because workers are rushed to meet a deadline.
Lobsters dont get caged or drugged or spread e-coli. Lobster waste is not likely to contaminate rivers with dangerous nitrogen either. Why doesn't the media find some other big joke?
If Sen. McCain and his fellow conservative degenerates can't figure out why lobsters are not in the same category with the bridge to nowhere or the Sheep Institute I pity them.
