Enjoy a Valentine book for children.
Creative energy stirs within me the moment I walk near a room of books. Time becomes irrelevant as I scan the shelves with titles. I am passionate about children's literature. With Valentine's Day around the corner, book covers with red hearts and pink roses catch my attention.

Roses are Pink
Book title: Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink
This book, written by Diane de Groat, is appropriate for the four to eight year old. From this title, the adult reader can initiate a discussion about the impact words may have on classmates.
Summary: Gilbert writes sweet Valentine poems for his classmates with the exception of two. He discovers what happens when mean words are written about others.
Reading Discussion prompts can be given at three different times during a story time.
The first prompt is designed to set the expectation of what the story is about.
Before reading: What value is there in giving Valentines?
The second prompt is during reading. This prompt is designed to help the listener focus on the story events.
During reading: How are the characters responding to Gilbert's Valentines?
The third prompt is designed to connect the story to the child on a more individual and personalized level.
After reading: What kind of words and phrases can you write for the Valentines you will give to your friends?
Challenge for Parents: Stretch your child's vocabulary. Before reading this book to your child brainstorm phrases that can be written for simple Valentines. While completing the after reading activity, write the phrases down for your child to use later when writing his or her Valentines.
Family reading tip: Extend the reading experience. Consider finding a simple activity that connects to the story and your child. This extension is modeling to your child that reading books are events with value, not just something done because it is required for school.
ISBN for Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink: 13: 978-0-688-15220-8
