As epidemiologist in Maramures/Romania, in the 1950-th, my job was to investigate the source of typhoid fever, typhos and syphilis, and eradicate it.

Maramures was the poorest county, in the north. The armies during WWII left behind diseases of epidemic proportion. Salmonella bacteria the causative agent of typhoid fever had been spread by the excrement of the inhabitants. The primitive outdoor latrines allowed it to descend into the adjacent wells. The population refused vaccination, but the spread of the disease forced them to accept it. The latrines and wells have been treated with desisfectants,

The vecicle of typhos were lice. They were so many, one could sweep them on the floors.

Syphilis was spread by sex.

The theme of my article is Salmonella, being spread in Mexico and the US.

It does not grow on plants, the source is human excrement, probaly Mexican carriers that work in the fields.
