Here we are, a whole month into 2011 already, and no-one has yet announced a new version of "Romeo and Juliet".

Hollywood Classics -- Romeo and Juliet

In my book, "Hollwood Classics Title Index to All Movies Reviewed in Books 1-24", I have a supplementary section (a mere 215 pages) examining a few of the films that didn't make it into the previous 24 books.

Mostly, they didn't fit the theme of the books concerned, And in a few cases, like "All the King's Men", the review was far too lengthy.

Also now published for the first time are reviews  of three movie versions of "Romeo and Juliet".

Not one of my favorite Shakespeare plays by any means ("Henry V" is my number one choice), "Romeo and Juliet" is popular with actors because it offers good roles for both the leads, and also provides three grand support opportunities in the roles of the nurse, Friar Lawrence and Mercutio.

Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard played the leads in the 1936 movie; Susan Shentall and Lawrence Harvey in the 1954; Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey in 1968.

Personally, I favor the 1954 version, although very few critics agree with me. I'll admit the leads are not perfect, but the movie is so stunningly photographed and set...
