The Review:
Victoria Wells loses first her teenaged son to a lake drowning and then several years later her husband Rudy to the sea. Rudy was a wheeler dealer and over the years Victoria’s love for him had dimmed. On the day of his expiration Victoria had gone to visit a divorce attorney. Victoria is dumbfounded to discover her daughter brooding and distant during her father’s funeral. Ahead of returning to college Carla does not come by the twelve room family home to look in on with her mother. In addition to the mortgage she is not sure she can afford Victoria is soon beset with a multitude of debts she did not realize Rudy had accrued. His long time attorney Burdine Spalding quickly attempts to ingratiate himself with Victoria as he assures her that he can untangle the legal mess. To help make ends meet Victoria rents out her family room to an ex con. Within the year Carla returns home beaten, broke and still choleric toward her mother. As time goes on Victoria begins to recognize she is being pursued, her home is plundered, she is falling in love with the handsome ex-con and Carla is as unbending as ever. At length Burdine Spalding makes known his real intentions following a proposal of marriage to Victoria.
In Dark Legacy talented writer Janssen has crafted a banner work over flowing with meritorious richly drawn characters projected against an absorbing framework of complicity, artifice, rare missing artifacts, greed and intrigue. Conversation among the various players is reasonable, at times gritty and occupied with more than enough sizzle to pull the reader right into the page. Dissension between Victoria and Carla is something every parent can identify with. Matthew is charming as the oft misinterpreted romantic lead. Burdine Spalding presents himself as a fellow the reader will be happy to detest as they learn more about him. Writer Janssen does an admirable job as she leads Victoria into understanding how despicable Spalding really is. Action produced in Dark Legacy is gripping, fast paced, filled with lots of tension and well-drawn scenarios sure to keep the reader enthralled.
Writer Janssen’s Dark Legacy is a richly detailed, page turner of a narrative drawing the reader into the tale from the opening lines of the prologue. Active interest is held fast right down to the last paragraph in this roller coaster of a trepidation filled romantic novel. There is just enough romantic passion to titillate the edacity of those who enjoy the genre, and more than enough anxiety driven suspense to keep those of us who enjoy an unsullied thriller absorbed.
Entertaining read, Happy to recommend.
