Advice on living with a herniated disc. Various treatments, exercises, and procedures for coping with every day back pain.

The key to living with a herniated disc is achieving relaxation in those tense, tight muscles. Keep moving, stay active and do not allow the persistent pain to cause you to abandon your efforts. You need to stay active. Every day you go without activity will cause your body to become more inert and more accustomed and conditioned to the pain. Avoid that situation at all costs.

What controls your muscles? Your brain does and lately your brain has conditioned itself to experience pain in certain muscles and it is compensating by shutting off those muscles. This is why the tightness sets in. Tightness reduces mobility and causes pain. In addition to staying active there a few emerging practices that address the mind body relationship of back pain: Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) and the Somatic approach to healing pain.
