FLU DEFINITIONS AND NAMES  

DEFINITIONS:

FLU:     MODERN (1950 - PRESENT) NAME FOR INFLUENZA ; ANY NATURAL AND OR LABORATORY ALTERED HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS  VIRAL DISEASES CHARACTERIZED BY: ONSET OF  SUDDEN FEVER, WEAKNESS LEADING TO PROSTRATION; SEVERE ACHES AND PAINS, LEADING TO AND CAUSING PROGRESSIVE INFLAMATION OF THE LUNGS, MUCUS MEMBRANE  AND OR RESPIRATORY TRACT. INFECTIONS.

INFLUENZA:     A COMMONLY USED (1800-1950) OLDER NAME TO DESCRIBE AN INFECTION OF THE LUNGS SUCH AS THE FLU (MODERN NAME FOR INFLUENZA) AND OTHER VIRAL LUNG INFECTIONS.

INFLUENZA WORD ORIGIN:    THE BELIEF THAT ALL PLAGUES AND EPIDEMICS WERE DUE TO THE INFLUENCE OF THE STARS.
                                                   
PLEURISY:   A COMMONLY USED (PRE 1800)OLDER NAME TO DESCRIBE AN INFECTION OF THE LUNGS SUCH  AS THE FLU (INFLUENZA) AND OTHER VIRAL INFECTIONS OF THE LUNGS AND RESPIRATORY TRACT.

COMMON FLU NAMES

AVIAN FLU (BIRD FLU):    ANY FLU VIRUS TRANSMITTED FROM BIRDS TO HUMANS.

ASIAN FLU:    A WORLDWIDE FLU EPIDEMIC AFFECTING HUMANS. STARTING AND PEAKING IN MANY DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD IN 1957 AND CONTINUING IN A MILDER FORM UNTIL THE PRESENT.

BIRD FLU:   A WORLDWIDE FLU EPIDEMIC AFFECTING HUMANS. STARTING AND PEAKING IN MANY DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD FROM 2003 -2007. CONTINUING IN A MILDER FORM UNTIL THE PRESENT.

HONG KONG FLU:   A WORLDWIDE FLU EPIDEMIC AFFECTING HUMANS. STARTING IN HONG KONG, CHINA AND PEAKING IN MANY DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD IN 1968. CONTINUING IN A MILDER FORM UNTIL THE PRESENT.

INFLUENZA:  THE 1918 SPANISH FLU EPIDEMIC IN THE UNITED STATES WHICH WAS COMMONLY CALLED INFLUENZA OR THE FLU. SEE SPANISH FLU.

RUSSIAN FLU:   A WORLDWIDE FLU EPIDEMIC AFFECTING HUMANS. STARTING IN RUSSIA AND PEAKING IN MANY DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD FROM 1889 -1890. CONTINUING IN A MILDER FORM UNTIL THE PRESENT.

SPANISH FLU:   A WORLDWIDE FLU EPIDEMIC AFFECTING HUMANS. STARTING IN SPAIN AND PEAKING IN MANY DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD IN 1918. CONTINUING IN A MILDER FORM UNTIL THE PRESENT.

SWINE FLU:  A WORLDWIDE FLU EPIDEMIC AFFECTING HUMANS. STARTING IN MEXICO IN 2008. PRESENTLY PEAKING IN MANY DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD.

WEST NILE FLU:  A WORLDWIDE FLU EPIDEMIC AFFECTING HUMANS. STARTING IN EGYPT AND PEAKING IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD FROM 1999 -2004. CONTINUING IN A MILDER FORM UNTIL THE PRESENT.
