Red’s Sandwich Shop:
One of my favorite places to eat is Red’s Sandwich Shop, located at 15 Central St. in Salem, MA. 01970. It is a reasonably priced restaurant, with a diner like atmosphere. They are open Monday-Saturday from 5:00am to 3:00pm, and on Sunday from 6:00am to 1:00pm.
The food and service are both excellent. The menu is varied, with everything from breakfast, which is available all day, to dinner plates that will keep you full for hours to come! For breakfast, there are a variety of omelets, egg dishes and cereal to choose from. You can also order one of their famous pancakes. These are HUGE, and will be over following the plate when served. They remind me of truck tires! However, they taste great and have good texture. The veggie omelet, served with home fries and toast is my favorite breakfast dish. Lunch at Red’s can be a sandwich; there is a great selection, including egg salad, tuna fish, turkey and hamburgers. I enjoy the seafood salad roll up the best. If you enjoy soup, a variety of homemade ones are on the menu, these change daily, and a favorite of mine is the butternut squash soup. All the soups are thick and hearty. The seafood chowder is about the best I have ever tasted, too. If you are in the mood for a full home cooked dinner, Red’s has many tempting dinners to order. There are meatloaf, turkey, and fish dishes to choose from. These come with a choice of potato and vegetable. You can also choose from a selection of pasta dishes, such as shrimp scampi or lobster ravioli. A good selection of dinner salads is also on the menu. My favorite dinner is the broiled seafood platter, haddock, shrimp and scallops, with French fries well done and coleslaw. If you still happen to have some room left for dessert, Red’s has an ever-changing assortment of tasty pies, tortes, ice cream treats and Jell-O available. It is difficult to choose which dessert I like the best, but one of my favorite’s that is usually on the menu is the tiramisu. I like to ask for extra raspberry sauce!
Red’s has a great selection of drinks, too. These include soda, lemonade, and a good choice of beer and wine. Coffee, which is the best in town, and tea are also on the menu.
I love the merlot or white wine when I go to Red’s, with a cup of coffee to go along with dessert.
One of the best things about Red’s is the waitress service. They are always pleasant and efficient. They chat and joke with customers and among themselves, creating a cheerful, homey feel to the restaurant. I have to admit, I’m pretty much a ‘regular’ there, and I am always greeted warmly when I walk in the door. Actually, Red’s has many regulars that are warmly greeted; Red’s truly is one of those places where “everyone knows your name”!!!
So, with great food, prices and service, how can one go wrong visiting Red’s? The only shame is they close early and on Sunday, only breakfast is available.
