THE LAST WEEK

A short story!

THE LAST WEEK
After fifty years of marriage, the love they shared still burned with the same fervency of its beginning. Truly life had been favorable to them, in spite of all the hills and valleys. Now, time was winding down and it seemed all they had were memories…good memories!
 ________________________________________
It came and went so swiftly, just like the adage states, “Time flies when you’re having fun!”
Yes, the last week proved to be the highlight of their journey. Life holds adventure, some find that life is an adventure.
On Monday, they flew to Paris and were mesmerized by the Eiffel Tower.
On Tuesday, the found themselves in Italy on a romantic gondola ride through the beautiful city of Venice!
From there on Wednesday their journey took them to Spain. They watched in awe as the matador bravely waved his large red cape in front of the bull all the while shouting, “Toro, toro!”
Their next stop on Thursday was in Switzerland, an exhilarating chairlift ride in the Alps. In the background were the sounds of yodelers, their voices echoing through the brisk mountain air.
The day always referred to as TGIF, Friday, found them riding in a one horse sleigh across the snow in the Appalachian valley as they made their way back home.
Day six was the best for food because they found themselves filled with all the savory flavors of the Bayou. Cajun food was surely their favorite and they assured the chefs that this day would never be forgotten!
The final day of the last week found them at the landmark of their roots, being proud to be Americans. As they saluted the Lady who holds the torch that enlightens the world they were indeed reminded of the value of freedom.
Yes, freedom was to be embraced and not to be taken lightly for it came at an awesome cost. The lives of countless thousands of men and women who bravely gave their all for the benefit of others was surely the principle much the same as the one known as Jesus the Nazarene. He gave His all that all might live and in turn give as well! Day seven was indeed the icing on the cake!
They sat back and smiled at each other at the end of the day, resolved that even though their lives were coming to an end, at least they shared memories; wonderful memories, memories that had lasted their lifetime.
                          ___________________________________________
You might ask yourself, “How in the world can two people at that age cover so much territory in seven days?”
For you see, they had no money, no means to go to all the exotic places mentioned here, literally.
But when the hearts are one, they can go anywhere—in their hearts and minds. As they viewed the picturesque scenes from page to page, they felt the aura of having been there!
As they closed the book, their lives came to a close as well.
It was quite a journey—the last week that they shared on earth together!

The End
