During this Christmas season, I wonder at the love of God toward mankind. I have heard the Christmas story hundreds of times, but this year I asked the Lord, “What was the significance of the gifts given to Jesus by the three wise men?” I was intrigued because these men were considered wise by God himself. I decided to look for the answer in the only place I knew to look, The Holy Bible.
Jesus tells us in his word to, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened," (Luke 11:9-10). God, who is always faithful, revealed the answer to my question in Exodus Chapter 30:1-38.
The pure Gold represents the golden altar that is put before the vail, where the ark of the testimony, the mercy seat, and the testimony reside. It is on this altar that the atonement was brought and killed, which is most holy. The wise man knew that Jesus Christ was the atonement for the souls of mankind. He was the ransom that had to be paid so that we could have access to the mercy seat of God.
The pure Myrrh represents the anointing oil that anoints the high priest. Christ is the only anointed priest worthy to offer the holiest atonement of all, his own sacrifice for our sin. He is the only one who is anointed to minister in our behalf before God. (Hebrew 9:11-12)
The pure Frankincense represents Jesus, the beaten fragrance, that makes a pure and holy perfume that is offered to God. It is here that God meets with mortal man and accepts him.
The wise men by their gifts testified that Jesus Christ is the atonement, the anointed high priest, the ransom for our sins, and the only place where God will meet with man. Faith in Jesus is the only way to be accepted by God. The wise men were wise indeed.
